AT Tacoma Habitat: Official Thread

so does that mean I could buy the Habitat for my 1st gen, then transfer it to a 2nd gen later? or is the "fit kit" part of each habitat? also, I know you guys said on the prototype you had to remove the bed caps on the 2nd gens... is that still the case or did that change with the production models...

Thanks

There are some variations between the bed sizes and construction between each generation, but from what we have seen the Habitat can be transferred from one generation to the next. The fit kit is separate from the Habitat and is specific to each generation. The bed caps have been removed on all fitments so far, we will continue to evaluate this moving forward.

Are there any plans to find a way to leave the bed caps on? Or is a major cause for water ingress the difficulty in sealing the bed caps? I'm asking because I'd be interested in how this would fit if I got fiberglass bedsides.

It's more that the caps form an uneven surface between the sides and the front, and the sides and the tailgate which makes both sealing and final fitment a challenge.

IMO it looks cleaner with the caps off. I removed mine when I got my flippac. You could always have them rhino lined before having the habitat installed if you plan far enough ahead. And it looks like the habitat covers all of the holes in the bed left after removing the caps, a task that is tricky with a flippac

I sold my Flippac to someone with a 1st gen DCSB. Fit great. IIRC, the inside bed width was within 1" at the cab between the 1st & 2nd gen.

I realize a lot of things have to happen first but definitely interested to see this product line extended to include the new Wrangler pickup. Here's to hoping the bed dimensions match the Tacoma's

Just thinking out loud but assuming you were using the drop panels and sleeping 4 people, it seems like there would not be a way to get out without waking and moving one or both of the people sleeping on the drop panels. It would be a bit of a pain to wake everyone in the truck every time anyone had to use the bathroom. Have you looked at adding an optional RTT style ladder to the cantilevered end of the habitat? Would be nice to be able to escape without waking the kids

Krystal mentioned that the inside of the Habitat was looking kind of overly metal and tactical, so I bought some mango wood veneer from a Pennsylvania furniture supplier and covered one of the walls. I might end up doing all four in the same pattern eventually, but I'm driving to Colorado this week so the other walls will have to wait. I threw rivnuts and a fabric MOLLE panel on the other side. Managed to do all of it without putting any holes through the side of the aluminum, but I did end up making three little dimples on one side that I'll have to sand down and repaint after I get done putting some more dents on her over the next few weeks!

I believe Mario answered your question previously:

Have you considered adding a ladder to allow two access points? Normally the bed works fine but a ladder would be a nice addition to avoid waking people up in the middle of the night if you're trying to sleep 4.

There is a zippered door on each side of the tent that allows for that already.

That looks amazing! To avoid the drill bit dimples use a collar on your drill bit to control penetration depth.

Rest assured that when more details on the new Jeep pick become available that we will develop a Habitat for it. It will be a nice alternative for the mid-size pick up market that we are eager to get our hands on.

You guys wouldn't really developed one for the jeep before you do a frontier, would you?
What fits the Tacoma fits the Frontier to the best of our knowledge. Email us your inside and outside truck bed dimensions and we can confirm for you.

Thanks, man! They actually came from little 1-inch deck screws. I didn't account for the fact that they'd try to pull in farther to make a seal. Whatever, though. It's not yours until you drill into it!

Ouch! Are you going to the Overland Festival in PA next week?
