ATC Rocky Mountain Rescue RMR60: The beginning

ATC Mountain Rescue 1: The beginning.

One of the many fun things I get to do while creating ATC gear for the off-road world is tinker with old Toyota Land Cruisers. This one is next. I got this 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser and title for a bottle of bourbon about 6-7 years ago. It's lived it's entire life in Boulder County, Colorado (Even has Nederland, Colorado High School Parking stickers on it) The engine has a nasty rod knock but it starts and runs smoothly.

My original plan was to simply use it as a parts truck for RhinoRide. But, over the years as it sat I've finally decided to get it running and make a bare bones, patina'd, 60 ATC Rescue Truck for our mountains. I've got a spare rebuilt engine sitting on a stand and once I get some other projects finished (isn't that always the case) this will be my next build project!

The real reason to build a winter truck is the RhinoRide is just too pretty to go rescue stuck tourist off the ski mountain and trails!

So, here's an update and name change on this project.

While I was pulling things apart on the Rescue 60 I had an epiphany and realized that we have a new ATC product line coming out. The new ATC line is called "Rock Mountain Recovery Gear". This is a line of heavy duty technical recovery bags for the off-road pro, SAR's member, commercial recovery businesses, etc.. So, with that in mind this project is now going to be the ATC Rocky Mountain Recovery (RMR60) Vehicle project and the 60 will become the promo vehicle for the RMR line!

Now, first of, this is not going to be a $100 million dollar SEMA build it's still just going to be a fun, part-time, resto, rusty parts, patina'd parts, "Roadkill tv" style, VERY budget minded!, buddy wrenching, beer drinking, live in the mountains type build that will be in some ATC/RMR/Lonely Gargoyle product pictures in some craggy mountain places. (And,hopefully starts and runs on a regular basis!)

Let the fun begin!

The "Original" Adventure Tool Company Test Truck! The RhinoRide60. I've had this 60 for well over 20 years and it's covered 10's of thousands of off-road miles while testing all our ATC gear. Now, the Resto-RMR60 is going to partner with the RhinoRide60 for this duty!

Can I suggest teal with the factory style decal it already has. But have the decal redone by a vinyl shop in cream / grey / black to match your logo?

I think it would look awesome with your company logo in the rear 1/4 window....

I love my Land Cruiser Club, The Rising Sun 4x4 Club of Denver, Co. Mainly, because it has amazing members, such as Ige/nuclearlemon and Doug/Telly!

They both offered up coveted spare parts for the Adventure Tool Companies RMR60 Resto build and my wife and I hopped in our truck and drove over 500 miles from Nederland to Wyoming to Monument to pickup these coveted patina'd cruiser parts!

I got (5) fj40 steelies with center caps from Ige and an awesome fj60 rear bumper and caps from Doug!

Thank you both!

Thanks for the suggestion!

What I'm thinking about is a antique looking stencil template I can paint a "aged" looking sign on the front doors.....we'll see once it comes together!

You’re starting to have fun with your brand vehicle restoration when you source an Old School, mechanical, non-LED, 1980’s Emergency Vehicle “Wedge” rotator light bar for the ATC/Rocky Mountain Recovery 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 Resto-Mod build for our new RMR Gearbag product line!

Any Old Cops out there remember the sound of these old mechanical "rotator" lightbar? That mechanical growling on the side of the road at 3am, on a pitch black night, in the middle of no where, by yourself, was somewhat comforting in a weird way....

Uh yeah, also comforting on those cold Kansas nights, reaching out the window with your Kel-Light in order to tap the end of the visi-bar with said light to get it working to pull over some one.:ROFLMAO:

Love it! That's real!

But, I thought all 80's Ks Cop's ran those awesome giant single red "gumball" rotator's on the top of their cars!

In the 70s, WPD had the twin beacons and in the 80s we had AeroDynics, both of which tended to be affected by cold temps. More than one "use" for a Kel Lite back then...

Awesome.

I worked a number of cases in the late 80's- early 90's with WPD's Drug Unit at the W. Airport. Good times!

Cheers.

Late 80s, early 90s? That would coincide with my assignment in WPD Narcs/Vice. After I got promoted, my partner and a couple of others got assigned to the Airport Interdiction unit, in the early 90s. Btw, I have always loved that silver and black Cruiser you have. Interested to see how it goes with your blue 60.

LOL!

Well, if you ever worked a "call ahead", "controlled delivery" or " tip" from KCI/MCI between 1989-1995 it most likely came from me or S/A Hicks!

We specifically bird dogged on Kansas plates from Sedgwick County, Riley County, Wyandotte County and Shawnee County during the those years due to the amount of crack $$$$ heading to LA/source city.

I need to look up the name of the guy I worked with down there.

Thanks on the Cruiser!
