Back from N rim of Grand Canyon

Just got back from a trip to Tuweep (Toroweap) AZ. This is one of the most remote areas of the Grand Canyon.

Before going everything I read warned of horrible roads and to be prepared for flats etc. Well the roads have been completely redone and they are now a gravel highway. A bus could drive there with no issues. I drove 50-55 mph and could have gone 80 mph if I wanted to. It is a real bummer because once everyone finds out the family car can go to the area it will be trashed with too many people. The only area where the road is a bit rough is the last mile to the overlook. A car could do it if driven slow.

The area is completely green and tons of flowers, beautiful. Get there quick before they dry up.

The views are beyond description. I actually felt a bit of fear and trepidation approaching the edge. it is 3000 feet straight down. It feels more like 3000 miles straight down as it is quite an odd feeling to walk up to the edge of a huge hole that is miles wide.

I will post more info and pictures once I get sorted.

Looking forward to the pictures. It sounded like a good number of folks leaving Expo were heading there. We were considering it too, but decided to head to Valley of the Gods, then up to the Canyonlands due to time constraints. I definately need to check that spot out though. I hear there is a nice 45 mile section of trail that follows the rim and is 4wd only. Did you check that out?

Re: the 45 mile drive. We completed the western leg of the Arizona Strip, i.e. from Twin Points to the Kanab Creek Canyon and found no 45 mile drive along the rim. Maybe its to the east of Kanab Creek Canyon. Now, I'd like to travel that road also.

I am looking forward to the pictures as well. I am considering this area for my next outing. Thanks for the updates on the road though.:)

I drove from St George UT to Tuweep. Here is a pic of the road.

There are two ways to Tuweep. From St George is longer but very scenic as you drive over the mountains.

The second way is from Fredonia AZ and it is flat high desert not much to see but only takes 2 hrs.

My original plan was to drive from Tuweep to the North Rim campground, about 80 mile from Tuweep. After speaking with the ranger I had to ditch that plan. he said the N Rim was completely buried in snow and impassable. All trails leading to it would become impassable at some point so no reason to continue there.

I decided to head up into UT and check out Bryce Canyon and Zion. I got snowed out of Bryce but Zion was just rain.

Here are some Tuweep pics.

I did that trip a few years ago, I think it's the best spot to see the Grand Canyon. No railings. Awesome place. Thanks

We went to the South Rim on our way back from Overland Expo but it was raining, miserable weather but dramatic scenery. We did the North rim several years ago

We camped on the edge of the South Rim with the Carbon Neutral Expedition... No words can explain how incredible the Grand Canyon is. We were on Navajo land, so it was pretty remote. Added a lot to the sense of awe to not have another person in sight.
