What insignias do you think you'll put on the Velco?
That would dictate the velcro shapes.

Above the pocket would be a really cool place to do an embroidery Safari logo. That would require a more "Square shaped" section of Velcro though.

That's what I'm asking you guys... weren't you the one who said all it needed was a U.S. Flag?

There are loads of velcro-backed emblems, flags, insignia, jokes, etc. out there. But if nobody wants to put any patches on the cover then I should save the cost and not put velcro on the production ones. I'll digitally install a flag for you...

That flag is roughly 2x3, if I did 2x6 Velcro there 2 typical 2x3 patches could be installed.

I just searched eBay on "velcro patch" and got almost 5,000 results: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...Xvelcro+patch.TRS2&_nkw=velcro+patch&_sacat=0

Here's a digital embroidery job. Definitely not something for production though, who's gonna want a Safari logo on their spare cover if they don't have a Safari Cab?

I'm all for the flag patch. But considering the std size is 2x3 I'm not sure the small size will be visible enough to make adding the Velcro worth the expense. Even if it is put on the rear surface I don't think I'd bother with the two patches on the edges.

Do you think the Velcro would pack with dust in the planned location and lose group? I'm not sure that would be a problem, just throwing out thoughts.

I'll finish up sewing the green cover, add the Velcro for patches, and we'll see how it looks, then everyone can chime in on whether or not to include the Velcro, and if so, where it should be on the cover.

If you're out mudding and the Velcro gets a good layer of mud, probably, but I don't think ordinary trail dust will cause a problem. The cover can go through the car wash, so that or a hose would clean everything up.

Ha! Sorry Jeff, I thought you were asking our thoughts about your personal version. I think a 4x6 velcro patch with the Safari logo embroidered in subdued colors, would be absolutely perfect for your rig, above the pocket.

For me, personally I'd want to sew on a 4x6 subdued American flag, for both vehicles because I live in an area where the Velco patches would get "borrowed". ;)
Think of your tire cover on the back of these two vehicles (note; the Scout now has a 35" tire replacing that 31").
So I'd probably do a black version for the Scout, and a Coyote Tan for the Jeep, and sew subdued green flag patches. :)

Hey, when are these due out? I've got a Visa gift card burning a hole in my wallet...

Also the company should include at least one business card when they ship them, because I'm sure their customers (like me) are going to get questions on where to buy. Or sew on their logo, in an inconspicuous place.

Scott,

Great idea about the business cards, I'll pass it along.

The company has one manufacturing quote and could move on that right away for availability probably in late January. I'm pursuing one more manufacturer for them, so that may take a few more weeks since it's the holidays. Whichever manufacturer the company ends up going with, it shouldn't be too long before these could be available - after all, it's not like we'd have to wait for a slow boat from China to deliver them, they'd be made in the U.S.A. :)

Are you sure you'd do a black version for the Scout? ;)

4x6 flag. I've enlarged the spare to about 35":

Wow! That does look good. Thanks for posting this Jeff.
I didn't think the Coyote would go with the butterscotch. But it looks great. That 4x6 flag looks perfect. :)

Looking forward to how this all comes out, and posting pictures of the real thing.

I finished sewing the green one this afternoon, here's a photo of all 4 on the sewing room floor. You can see the Velcro for patches above the pocket flap on the green one. Photos of it on the Jeep tomorrow.

yeah, that looks great!

So basically exactly backwards of what I was originally thinking, looks best...
Thanks Jeff, I'm glad someone is watching out for me.
That's perfect! :)

First off, these are awesome. I want one, but I also want that spare mounted jerry can mount......decisions decisions....

The patch idea should be very popular, both with the flags and other patches. I haven't personally served in the military (yet), but I was involved with their youth program for almost a decade and we would train with active units over the summer, and sometimes they would give us patches from unit that they wore on their uniforms. I always remember that being the coolest thing ever. If I was that proud to wear that insignia after a couple week training, I can imagine the pride of actually serving. This can't compete with the ensign of course, but it could prove a popular use.

Yeah, the spare mount competes for the same space that the inside pocket of the Tactical Spare Cover occupies, plus you'd need a hole in the spare cover for the mounting stud.

Maybe the side mount?

If you prefer the jerry can at the back, I have designed a mount that bolts to the HD hinges, that would allow both the spare cover and a jerry can on the back (now you'll tell me you wanted to mount your HiLift on the tailgate hinges? :)). I haven't tried to get the hinge-mount jerry can carrier into production because it doesn't fit with very large spares, but for stock or slightly larger spares there's still enough room on the tailgate for a jerry can.

That's a great story, thanks. I'll post some photos of the cover with patches applied today, we can see what people think.

Photos of the green Tactical Spare Cover prototype on the Jeep.

I only have 1 green pouch, so I used some ACU pouches instead. In this first photo I've got a Jeep patch on the side and a four star patch on the face.

The 4 colors so far:

I think the company will go with black and Coyote first, in 32" (stock tire size) and 35", at least to start. Other colors and sizes will depend on interest and how well the first ones go.

Are there any colors that would be good to do that I've missed? I can do prototypes in other colors if there's enough interest.

I can't think of a color that doesn't go with a Jeep. But that could go on, and on, and on...
You'd have to hire Santa's elves for the nine months of the year they are on vacation, to keep up with the demand. ;)

I'm digging your 4 star General & Jeep patch. Very fitting for your rig.
