Barn Door for JK factory hardtops

Having designed a number of jerry can and Rotopax carriers for the JK and TJ, I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to carry fuel. When I found this stainless steel NATO can for less than $10 the other day, I had to grab one.

I don't think I'll need to design a mount for this one though, pretty much everyone already has a place to carry it:

Although two of them fit very nicely in a pouch I've got hanging on the Molle Bar sleeve on my roll bar...

These are of course not useful on the trail - they're intended to hold a convenient little nip, but alcohol has no place on the trail.

I don't know, they could prove helpful for a more rugged container for 1st aid liquids (rubbing alcohol or peroxide) keep them on the the roll bar near the 1st aid kit, maybe find a way to strap them in

Good idea - I just went through my collection of Molle pouches and a grenade pouch is a perfect size for the mini jerry can. That pouch plus a "Molle Bars" sleeve like the one in the photo to go on the roll bar and you can mount the grenade pouch plus the first aid kit very nicely.

Sure, I had the Retro Wrangler pickup out today doing some hauling duty with one of the trailer, so I set the Rhino printout in place. It's not the right size, but you asked for something "just for fun", here it is...

Thanks, me likey :) I really like your truck in general, its just a really nice little truck.

Still drooling over the commando and cj front ends, they make me excited for what's in store for the jk. Also really digging the tj flat fenders, those things are sweet.

Have you ever thought about making a thread or a really basic website where you can just dump all the linked to your various projects over the years between all the various forums? Seems like every time I go to show someone one of your projects I stumble across another one. I actually found your Commando cab through a camper trailer thread.

Maybe that jerry can is for liquor cycles ;)

I really like the TJ flat fenders too. The problem is that I don't have enough Jeeps to put them on one. I do have two TJ-based Jeeps, but I like the Retro Wrangler pickup as it is with a stock TJ front clip. They could be installed on the LJ-8, but I like the CJ kit exactly as it is replicating a stock CJ.

The TJ flat fenders were scheduled to become a commercial product about two years ago - Kentrol, which was one of the larger Jeep fiberglass manufacturers, signed up for them and started making their production molds from my master parts. Sometime during that process Tom Troll, the owner of Kentrol, decided to retire and as part of that he closed the fiberglass part of their operation. Oh well, maybe someday I'll find a Jeep to put them on. Maybe the Commando kit too. For now the parts are taking up space in my storage room :).

I've been asked that a few times, but it's not something I'll probably do. I'd much rather spend my time designing and building new things than working up links to things I've already done. Bit if someone/some group wants to take that project on, I'll be happy to work with them,

I agree, I like the pickup stock, and the LJ-8 is perfection. That's a shame about the fiberglass company, I think that would've been big hit. I mean, I've got a TJ that would love that treatment ;) Plus it would be really cool to see it side by side with our CJ5, but I live far enough away you wouldn't see it around town every day. Speaking of CJs, wouldn't it be cool to replicate an old metal world cab hard top and doors with fiberglass?

I've been kicking several future job ideas and have a couple questions for you anyway. I'll pm you after classes.

I think the majority of people here would agree with you that your talents are better spent on things other than websites :)

Maybe you're talking about some different type of World Cab, but I think my fiberglass LJ Safari Cab is close enough to call that one done... it's not an exact copy of the Jeep factory World Cab, but it has similar lines and does have the barn door in the back like the World Cab does. The major difference is that the World Cab drip rail goes up behind the doors, allowing larger side windows than my Safari Cab does, which has a flat drip rail.

A Scrambler with a World Cab was one of my daily drivers for years, here are shots of both for comparison...

Looking forward to hearing your ideas.

I think I generalized all CJ metal hard tops into the "World Cab" classification, my bad. I seem to remember you mentioning your scrambler world cab being the inspiration for your Safari Cab. Still one of my favorites. I love the ad of the Scrambler going through the river and your corresponding picture with yours, that's awesome. Going back through online pictures I don't see the other CJ hard tops being much different, I think what tripped me up was the over sized metal doors on some CJ5s that covered up the hump in front of the rear wheels, like on the mail Jeeps.

The CJ3B site has a lot of detail on hardtops for early CJ's: http://www.cj3b.info/Hardtop.html. None are "World Cabs" though, the World Cab was a Jeep factory product intended for export and wasn't introduced until the 80's. It shipped overseas in CKD form ("completely knocked down", a.k.a. disassembled). They were available for CJ-7's CJ-8's and the hardtop on the CJ-10a aircraft tug is also a World Cab. As far as I know they were only produced for a few years in the US for overseas shipment, but they did continue to be produced both in Venezuela and Israel for CJ's and later for YJ's, including the long wheelbase YJ-based "Storm" produced for the Israeli military. They're actually fairly common in those countries, although there were/are very few in the US (<250).

I've been waiting to start cutting sheet metal for the Retro Rhino project until I had all the front grille panel hardware in my hands to verify the final dimensions of the panel. Here's everything laid out...

The headlights are JK headlights mounted in original FSJ headlight buckets with original FSJ trim rings. The lights fit perfectly and the buckets will mount very nicely in the new fiberglass front panel.

The factory "pie plates" are much too large for the scaled-down panel, so I'm using an alternative that's several inches smaller than the original factory ones. They're proportioned well for the scaled down front panel.

I've got two original Jeep emblems for the grille, the shiny one needs new paint in the center logo and the dull one needs to be polished but the original paint is perfect. Not sure if I can polish the dull one without affecting the paint, I'll try that later in the project because it's not urgent now.

Those are FSJ Rhino turn signal/marker lights in the photo but I don't plan to use them - I think they're a little too large on the scaled-down panel, so I'll use something smaller.

For a while I've wanted to build a cargo rack that takes advantage of my HD tailgate hinges and tailgate reinforcement. I found the time to make a prototype so here's a photo. The rack attaches to the hinges and reinforcement and swings with the tailgate. It'll clear at least a 37" spare (I've only got factory 32's).

Of course I had to submit it to the 225-lb. gorilla test, so here's a video. It's got a built-in step to make access for gorillas easy...

I'm digging the rack. That is very cool.
If it goes to market, it would be awesome for an optional plug in CHMSL. :)

It's funny you mention the CMHSL because just this morning I picked up some plugs to match the JK's wiring so I could implement a plug-in CHMSL on the rack.

CHMSLplug_zpscrfrhkgl.jpg

The rack is something I've been discussing for a while with the company that manufactures the HD hinges and tailgate reinforcement, I've wanted to do something like this to take advantage of the extra strength the hinges and reinforcement provide. If they like what I've built they'll probably show it as an engineering proof-of-concept in their booth at the vendor show at Easter Jeep Safari. It won't be on my Jeep, I'll be driving the LJ for that event, but it probably would be on one of their Jeeps - which is why I got the plugs to make the CHMSL plug-and-play.

Today I put a few finishing touches on the rack, including Molle grids on the sides. As soon as I get the CHMSL done and get the parts reinstalled I'll post some photos.
