Background:
The base truck is one from this story:
A few days after this story was published I bought 9 of those 10 ambulances.
This has been a long and painful journey for me.
Near the end of 2019 I started a company aiming to build mid-luxury campers based on Ford Transit AWD cutaways.
As you can probably guess from the date, Covid 19 quickly became a severe issue. Plenty of delay with parts and most important: the lack of available base trucks.
When that story was publish, the camper had already been build and had been waiting for a chassis for months.
Those trucks were salvation! 9 brand new chassis to build campers. Yeah!
The salvation quickly turned to nightmare. A nightmare of bureaucratic red tape. And a descent into high stress mental health issues. Long story short, it killed the company.
The prototype camper ended up in storage waiting for me to have the means to finish it.
And here we are.

This truck was built to be the flagship prototype of my company.
It is NOT 4x4, but it was build designed to be. A number of company can do the conversion.

The truck:
The camper is on the robust Ford E-450 series chassis. This exceptional vehicle has been meticulously stored for the past 18 years and features a 6.0 Turbo Diesel engine that has been upgraded to solve the most common issues associated with this model.

Yes! It is a 2006 Ford E-450 with only 293.9 km to the odometer! You read that right: Not 250,000km, only 293.9 km! The chassis is pre-DPF and pre-DEF regulations, so no pesky unreliable systems on your camper.

The 6.0l Turbo diesel is a powerful engine that can easily move this camper which is way under the rated 14,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. The truck is outfitted with a giant 55 Gallons diesel tank.

The camper:
It is a full composite body with an overall insulation rating of R-7.5 making it a 4 seasons habitat.
It has been outfitted to be totally off-grid and to operate all systems for very long periods of time.

Here are the highlights of the systems.
All heat is produced by a Hydronic system, using coolant. The heat comes from 3 possible sources:
  • The truck engine, which will use the otherwise wasted heat of the engine.
  • A Espar diesel engine heater.
  • 110V element to be used when the truck is plugged in, mainly for long term storage in cold conditions.

This system will provide constant comfortable dry air and most importantly, hot water on demand without the need for a reservoir. You have 50 Gallons of clean water on board, so you can have 50 Gallons hot water! And no lukewarm water here, it is so hot that a thermostatic mixing valve is a necessary safety feature.
The system can also be used in reverse to heat up the truck engine for smooth start up in very cold temperatures.

The jewel of this camper is the electric systems. Nothing but high end components, professionally designed and installed.
They were designed to allow the Air Conditioner unit to operate 12hrs a day, fully offgrid. This is a feat that is very difficult to achieve. The problem is not in the power storage, the challenge is to recharge the batteries in time to allow the AC to run another 12hrs.
To this end, the truck has been equipped with a dedicated 280 Amp alternator, and a specialized electric setup to extract as much power as possible from it to recharge the battery bank.
To assist in the recharge, 600 Watts of solar panels are mounted to the roof. In most scenarios. The battery bank can be fully recharged within 60 mins of the engine running after operating the AC for 12 hrs. During testing it ran a full 24 hrs at max capacity which depleted the batteries only down to 50%, it took a little less than 90 mins of driving to fully recharge. All this means that you never, ever, worry about having enough to power the fridge, the lights, the coffee maker, the air fryer, or the induction cook stove.

The full size bed is on a lifting system, allowing the meal and chill booth to share the same space, and to be 2 separate full size beds. Doors and windows are all high quality.
There is plenty of storage and a wide walking space. The entry and the shower share the same space. Most of the furniture is made of composite materials as the design was carefully chosen to eliminate any potential water damage issues. Nothing to rot. The floor cover is industrial grade, one piece vinyl cover that is used in public spaces like metro wagons and shopping malls.

Specs:
Ford 2006 E-450 ambulance package with 293.9 km odometer. 6.0L Turbo Diesel, pre-emission regulations.
Lots of work done: fresh fluids all around. Change of the dual alternators for more power.
The most common known issues with this engine model have been fixed before ever becoming an issue.

Camper:
Full composite body. L12’ x W8’ x H7’
Volts 542 amps/hr Lithium-Ion of batteries (in a pair)
600W of solar charging, 3360 Watts of Alternator charging.
Nearly all Victron high end components. Professionally designed and installed.

Hydronic heat provides hot air and instant hot water on demand.
Comfortable living space that can sleep 4, and an eating booth that can accommodate up to 6 people.
12V Air Conditioning designed for off grid applications.
Portable chemical toilet.
50 Gallons of water tanks. 3 stages filtered dedicated water tap.
25 Gallons of gray water. No black water.
High End Engel dual zone 60L

The camper is located in Montreal, Canada.
I have the necessary paperwork needed for the importation into the US.

Great looking build. The original ad for the ambulence noted “ We all know that it does not have the same reliability reputation as the venerable 7.3. But by now, all of the issues have been well documented, and solid fixes are widely available. The first modification should be to upgrade the Oil and EGR coolers. With a little attention, you should be able to make it “bulletproof” for many exciting miles.Did you replace the oil and EGR coolers? Anything done to the head or turbo? I had a 6.0 and once the underlying issues were fixed its a strong motor. Thanks.

Oil and EGR Cooler were replaced with aftermarket part. Water pump also replaced with a better one. To my knowledge the turbo is not known to be a problematic part. As for the head gasket and head bolts, they are usually only a problem on engines that have been chipped for more power, which isn't the case here. The FICM was not replaced. Its known issues have many identifiable warning symptoms and typically only fail above 100,000miles. So out of the 5 major known issues, the 3 most important ones were bulletproofed. Both alternators were also changed for more powerful and more reliable ones.
