Another vote for Monstaliner. Great stuff. It can also be sprayed for tight access, or large areas. Tintable to match most any color as well.

As with any coating application, most of the time (and the key to success) is in the prep work.

There is some details in my build thread, but it you have any questions drop me a line. I sprayed my entire van (almost as big as an ambo), so I learned a thing or two. :victory:

That probably is a superior product but the problem for Pat is the application. It has to be sprayed with a bulky gravity gun and access is most likely an issue when working inside some of his compartments.

Yeah I didn't care for the gravity hopper gun. A smaller $20 undercoating gun works well.

U-Pol has a small schutz (sp?) gun.Screenshot_2016-08-09-23-21-21-1.jpg

The shutz (Spelling?) works great for tight spots and small jobs. For doing big areas, a gravity feed gun really cuts the time down, and can make the texture more regular. If I did another van with monstaliner, I would play around with a drywall texture gun (the kind with the hopper). They are cheap, and put on coating much faster. Sure beats putting 5 gallons through a small shutz gun... Plus they have adjustable orifices to control texture.

Good info all around!

Tom, I hope you're taking good notes so you can figure it all out, and then just let me know! :D

With this kind of muck, gravity feed is the easiest solution, but there's nothing that can get as heavy as a drywall hopper gun full of anything.

If you do use one, saw off about half the hopper so it only holds about a quart or two - it will also be a lot easier to maneuver in a compartment.

Slow as cold hog snot progress on the sanding/taping. I'd say the sanding is about 90% with some detailing to do. I ended up doing the roof of the cab by mistake. I was doing the portion of the box above the cab, was on a roll, and took the D/A to the roof. There was this immediate and annoying screaming voice in the back of my brain somewhere that wouldn't shut up and it suddenly made the connection between eye balls and frontal lobe. I did my best Charlie Brown ARGHHHHHHHhhhhhhh!!!!! and just about face-palmed myself off my ladder, but the deed was done.

Only question now is shoot it in white (I don't have) or go ahead and shoot it the same as the rest. I had planned on leaving all the roof white for heat deflection.

Taping sucks. Almost to the same Super Massive Black Hole level of suckage that is sanding. About 50% on the module for taping.

Not sure how far I'll get this weekend because motivation is low. Somehow related to the 85-90 deg, 300% humidity that is our weather at the moment.

Tom, my roof is in pretty good shape, with the exception of one small ding, but I was thinking about adding some type of insulating/reflective coating to help keep it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Since you have already messed up the paint on top and will have to re-coat it anyway, why not do the same?

This is one product I was looking at. It seems to have been used quite a bit by people on this forum, and also has a 4.5 star rating. This is a two part product.

Most "insulation" coatings are not worth much of anything. To get good R value you need thickness, (more than paint!) period. The best property a roof paint can have is very high reflectivity. So a pure white works. If you can find a paint that reflects IR that would be a bonus (about half of sunlight is IR).

Interlux brightside (or other marine urethane topside paint) would work well for a roof. It can be applied using roll and tip. It is a durable urethane that will handle constant UV without a problem.

Actually. Y roof is fine, if a bit on the dirty side. I'll address that after the paint, which should be happening aaaaany moment now. Seriously, getting close. I have the bulk of the taping done, and the vast majority of the sanding. Might have to do some touch up sanding in the pinch seam area under the cab doors where the sissy steps were bolted on, but that should be a out it.

The clearance lights on the cab were a bit uncomfortable to do. Had to climb to the top of the module and lay on my impressive gut overhanging the cab t get them taped, and do some touch up sanding. Good times.

I took a couple of Pulitzer Prize winning photos of my tape job and I'll get those posted tonight.

I'm going to try to get it wiped down mon/tues and look to shoot wed/thur, which probably means I'll have it done sometime around the end of September.

Best laid plans and all that....
