Tom, slap a magnet on the side of it and see if it sticks. Of course cheap SS will stick to some extent also.

Bob, I like Proto tools also. I only have a few sockets and they are so old the markings on the sides are just about worn off, but they still work just as well as they did when they were brand new.

Stuck like white on rice. I figured it wasn't premium SS, I mean it comes from China AND it's just a toolbox, but I did that test at the store. My little mag based light stuck to both versions just the same. Pretty sure they're the same cheap SS, one painted and one not.

Either way I didn't really care since I don't tend to roll my boxes out in the rain anyway, and I couldn't see the extra 400 bones for the "SS" model.

Stainless steel is generally non-magnetic, with a some exceptions.

---The 300 series are austenitic stainless alloys, and are normally non-magnetic, but they can become slightly magnetic through cold working or long periods of vibration - I saw this when I tried to drill some holes in a stainless steel railroad car that had been flexing and vibrating for millions of miles. It took a carbide drill to get a hole started.

---The 400 series stainless steels are all magnetic. This is primarily due to their high concentration of iron and their granular structure. These stainless steels can be heat treated for increased strength.

In the case of a tool box, the same production line can run either stainless steel or carbon steel equally well - if the painted tool boxes can be made from pre-coated steel, then no paint line is required.

10-4 on that!

Now, you get to spend numerous hours cleaning and sorting all your tools and figuring out where to put them in the new boxes. Have fun!

A long time ago, I realized that I needed more tool storage, and I started looking at CL to see what was out there. I found a 42" Snap-On cabinet for $300 that sounded interesting - I called, and it was for sale by a marina. They had supplied the box to their first mechanic, but when he left, the replacement had his own box. It followed me home.

I had planned to really get organized, with drawers dedicated to specific functions and types of tools, but after a day or so of sorting, I realized that I would need one of those giant 10 ft long, multi-story boxes to do what I wanted to do - the kind of box that costs slightly more than a 3 bedroom rambler.

I went to PLAN-B, and I used the new box for added storage, and I gave up on being fancy. Lets face it -- I don't use my tools to make a living, I don't depreciate them on my taxes, if I need a while to track down a tool in a box, so what? I have a mixture of tool storage locations -- Craftsman, Snap On (one box), Knaack, Stanley-Vidmar, a tool pegboard, and the tops of my workbenches. Like all good tool boxes, the top box is fuller than it can be and still close the top cover, and the bottom drawer is definitely miscellaneous.

I'm guessing these were painted after the fact, since all the welds are painted over. It doesn't really matter, SS or not, because I'm no pro either and didn't pay the price anyway.

For something really controversial, how 'bout that election huh? :lurk: (It's a joke. No answer expected!)

Boy this Ambo thing has stalled big time. Old Man Winter can really put the boots to enthusiasm, so I bought this thing as Santas' gift to me. Now I just have to figure out some way to make it relevant! It's not really the one I wanted, but that one has a 6-8 wk lead time and I don't do well with non instant gratification (I can't wait) so I bought this as a learning platform. Either that or I just bought a really big and really expensive door stop.

Now we have someone who can print us wedges to aim our LED replacement L&R scene lights downwards and adapt the Wheelen patern to the LED light.

Not to mention all the other random things we can dream up... Perhaps next would be a dash mount for the 7" backup monitor which blends in and looks like it came that way. I'd use a Double Din display, but I feel it's too low and far away.

I reckon it will be a quick learn for you. Ever since you mentioned 3D Printing a while back,
I have been on "the verge" of getting one.
Just haven't had the time to put into it. Yet......

Anxious to see how you like it!

The problem is I get into it long enough to get a bit dangerous, and then I get on to something else and by the time I come back I've forgotten everything, because I don't stay on it long enough for enough info to get shuffled into long term memory. It's starting over every single time. I have a small cnc shearline desk top mill that I've done a few projects on...4 yrs ago. I have a home made cnc router that I've done a few things on, about 10 years ago.

All that was 2d AutoCAD and about the only thing I remember about it is the name. :(

Same here, especially lately.

I used to be very good at reading and learning new tech, i.e. computer programs, electronics, equipment, etc., but my attention span is not what it used to be anymore. I have several ham radios, a scanner, a new Cannon DSLR camera, and a few other things sitting here, all waiting for me to learn how to do anything other than the very basic operations.

Well the test print was a success. Nothing spectacular, just a keychain of the Mfgrs logo. Right now it's humming away doing a filament holder so I can use 3rd party filament spools. If that one goes well I call it a success. I'll pop a couple pics tomorrow.

Somebody PLEASE help me design some kind of graphics for this thing. I am at a complete loss. Just thinking about it makes me go cross-eyed and start drooling.
