Best M/T tyre? 285/70/17

Hi All,

I'm looking for a little advice if you'd be so kind. I've narrowed down the choice to the following (see below) but I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially if you've got a lot of experience with the tyres below. Honest pros and cons.

We're looking for:
  • A good all-rounder
  • All seasons ideally
  • One that is particularly focussed on off-road capabilities in a variety of terrains (Around 75% of overall use will be off-road)
  • Strong side walls (Min 3 ply)
  • Good longevity
I'm aware there's various A/T tyres out there but we feel we need something a little more aggressive for what we generally do. So a M/T tyre is what’s been decided.

With all that in mind, please feel free to add your thoughts on which one is the best and why. If I've missed one you strongly recommend, I'm keen to hear what and why. Thanks so much in advance! 🙏

Here's the options we're looking at:
  • General Grabber X3
  • Falken Wildpeak M/T
  • BF Goodrich KM3
  • Toyo Open Country M/T
  • Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ P3
I look forward to seeing what people think!

I have always had good luck with Toyo and always have heard good experiences from people running them. I have the Toyo M/T on my ambo project and they ride nice but I haven't used them offroad yet. I have run Toyo A/T 3 on my old Cherokee and my current Xterra. When I replace the tires on my Ram with camper, I am going to go with Toyo Open Country RT Trails to give me a hybrid AT/MT tire. There have been a lot of great reviews of the RT Trails (versus the standard RT).

Without a doubt - the Toyo Open Country Mud Terrains are the most durable.

I live in the back country of Nevada. If I leave my house and drive south it is 133 miles to pavement. My problem was always rock breaks in the tires. Until I installed the Toyo M/T tires. Never had a flat with those. One of the few tires you can buy that have 7 actual plies in the tread area and that makes the difference. This is the sidewall information off one of my Toyo tires:

My current set of Toyos is getting very thin so I just ordered another set. Most expensive tire there is but to me, worth it in the long run.

Another tire you might consider is the Maxxis Razr Mud Terrain. It is a cheaper alternative to the Toyo, same number of plies in the tread and sidewall, but I see a lot of the pickups around here using them.

I am on my second set of Nitto Trail Grapplers. I love them and they perform great in all weather. Not experience with Toyo so I can not compare.

Another Toyo M/T user here with zero issues from them. They have been the only thing to hold up under my heavy truck and long distance gravel and rock roads.
