Best way into and out of pop up?

goin camping

Explorer
This is a newbie question from a trailer guy.

We're looking at Pop up truck campers as a way to get to place we can't haul the stream to. Our truck is an F250 4X4 that is raised a few inches over stock.

The bed of the truck is approx. four feet off the ground. What system(s) are there so us and our dogs can get in and out of the camper?

Please be generous in posting pics and links. Thanks

I used a small step stool which I still carry to clip down the top of my 4WC on my 2005 Tundra. It was not as solid as I wanted. I made the step in the attached pictures and it is perfect for what I need.

@ bill harr: That is some nice fab work!

After slipping off my 'step' bumper last week after loading the snow blower, I was thinking of some type of reciever step.

Me being disabled, and my dad just turned 70, we need something better for getting into the bed of the trucks.

Just got my idea!! Thanks!

On mine I'm able to step in the bumper groove for quick in-outs. When set up for real I use a 2 step stool. For dogs I'd likely look towards a receiver mounted step(s) so it doesn't kick out.

I on the other hand, chose a heavy more expensive system (typical for me!) when I got my FWC & it's still on today (helps validate the effort).
I welded up a flip down step that fits into the 2" receiver, it's heavy enough to take any weight, so I use it all the time for getting in & loading the truck bed.
the FWC door is not centered so you want to make the step a bit wider than the door, to reach over to the far side of the door from the centered receiver, I also put a plate mount on the underside, as it covers the plate when up. This should give about a 12" step up into the camper which works great for helping not hit your head when passing through the doorway.
I also took off the tailgate as it took too long to remove on the spur of the moment, (when you absolutely positively need to go camping NOW!) & just keep the step & rear net on all the time.

^ Now that is impressive. I like it, but it does look heavy.

Interesting about the tailgate, on my Gen2 it takes about 10 seconds to remove the tailgate. Got a good laugh with the "got to go camping NOW". :)

We have used a hitch haul several times and used it to enter the camper before setting up camp and found it to be too big a step for our comfort.exiting was worse as its a big drop from the camper to hitch haul on our dodge.try someones hitch haul before you buy one of those ramp types if you can. good luck

I have a hitch step on our FG. It works if I don't want to install the scissor steps but there are two very tall steps with the hitch step that I would not want to use on a regular basis. The hitch step stays in place when the scissor steps are installed.

I have a truck box mounted on a hitch haul, so it doubles as a porch. Then a basic 2 step stool gets me to the ground.
