My bad, I finally read through your whole thread and see that someone else asked the same dumb question. But here's another one. Those wheels are bada$$. What rims are they?

Can you explain why the change to new springs at UJOR? What else did Chris toss on?

The original springs were early progressives and got a case of the sags. Other than that we plumbed & wired a ton of stuff including the OBA, rear winch, aux house battery, airbags and some lighting.

Tire Chains

I'm pretty much settled on these tire chains, anybody have any thoughts or opinions?

Hey Tyrant, don't know if you have much experience with tire chains, but they are a real PITA to run. In fact, probably the biggest reason I had Chris do my conversion was so I Wouldn't have to chain up over the Colo. passes when chain law is in effect. (Law says either chains or 4wd). First you get to install the chains in the freezing icy cold (PITA), then you are limited to 35 mph and have no traction once you hit dry pavement again (PITA), and the chains are constantly needing readjustment because they get loose and tear up your tire or beat the p*ss out of your body work (major PITA). With those big tires and 4wd, I just cant imagine where you'd actually Need chains. . back country Alaska maybe?

I don't have experience with chains at all except for putting them on some utility vehicles and work vans when I was a younger man. I am however going to be traveling through almost every part of North America and want to be totally prepared for anything and everything. I will probably be alone for most of the trip and don't want to cut myself short in an emergency situation where there will be no help around. part of my planning for my big adventurous journey is taking one and two and three week trips here and there over the next year or so, I am not a four-wheel-drive-off-road maven and I am slowly learning the ropes. I didn't even know what a locker was or limited slip two years ago!!
Thank you for the input and advice, it is incredibly welcome and of course, encouraged. I have a lot to learn and this forum itself has been a treasure trove for me. It seems that everybody who is into this type of life lives so far away from me

I don't use chain for on road use but for offroad use they are worth their weight in gold... You will find yourself intentionally looking for deeper and deeper snow to drive through just for the fun of it. 4 vbar chains and locked front/rear axles will tractor through insane areas that you would never otherwise think is possible.

I got stuck here but it's because I was on a lake and the chains dug into the ice until my front diff was sitting on ice. Had I been on firmer ground where the chains could grab rocks and roots, I would have been fine.

Well I'll say one thing; you get that monster of yours chained up on all 4, you should be able to drive straight up a GLACIER with no worries!! Cheers and I do dig the van! :coffeedrink:
