Bodymounts

Hi all

I'm a rather new member from Denmark, and my girlfriend an i are the proud owners of a Volvo TGB 13 6x6.

Well, it's an old army truck from 1975, so comfort was never really in the specifications!

One of the issues is noise. The cab is directly mounted to the frame with what appears to be a 2mm mylon washer in between. So vibrations and noise is transmitted directly from the frame to the cab.

My question is if any of the knowledgeable members of this fine forum can give me any input on the very best in bodymounts?

I am certain that a lot of the old rigs here could benefit from it!

Looking forward to some input!

Hi Christian:

A lot of Hummer owners have issues with a loud cabin. Our body joints have a significant rubber puck, well over an inch thick. Much of the noise in Hummers comes from reverberation due to undampened body walls. Dynamat is a popular product used to cover the body surfaces and reduce cabin noise.

I noticed a significant difference in cabin noise when I changed tires from Goodyear MTs to TrXus MTs.

Please post some pictures!

Thanks for the reply!

I know how loud Hummers are! I drove a special armoured version refitted i Switzerland in the army.

I know about Dynamat and Damplifier, the differences between butyl and asfalt based product etc.

But with the cab hard-mounted to the frame noise-killer products are a band-aid on a broken dam! So it's like having these guys in the cab with you

I have used poly mounts on my Cruiser but I have heard that they actually transmits more noise that rubber. Your rubber mount might be the way to go!

On the Volvo we have really free hands as long as the cab stays on when braking hard!

I have heard about air systems, gel system etc. on high-class trucks and cars but haven't seen any.

So all ideas are welcome!

I have no pics of the mounts but i'll se if i can get one tomorrow.
Meanwhile here's a pic of the truck as it looks now - before we start building:

And here's what we hope for:

Very cool truck Christian!

Here's a link:http://www.volvoc303.co.uk/richard's_tgb13_6x6.htm

Note that Richard did do some soundproofing but ended up using microphones and headphones. I'm not sure how legal this is on the road.

here's another link from (I think) the same Richard:

This addresses your question about the mounts. This guy is in Scotland. He would be a great contact for you as he sells parts for your truck!

Thanks for the links Rick!:coffee:

I don't think the small plane style approach will work in the long run, of course that will keep us from fighting when we go around the world, if I start being an *** to listen to she'll just take them of!

But :rally_guys: is not our goal.

the idea of just replacing the nylon with rubber is actually good. But I think I'm gonna replicate the mounting on the old 60. just use other parts than Toyota We are not billionaires...!

Maybe somebody can pitch in with a lead on a good source for body mounts?

Try contacting Energy Suspension here in the states. I used their black [softer] mounts when I redid my Ford.
I doubt they'd have your application but, with the hundreds of different mounts they produce you might find something close.

Energy 9-4101 and 9-4102 are universal mounts with a different thickness and durometer, I've used them on several builds and the softer mounts worked very good for mounting bodies.

Thanks for the link it definetly looks like something that will work.
I'll take some photos today and upload and mail to them also so they might be able to help me.

Energy 9-4101 and 9-4102 looks perfect though, but advise from the manufacturer can't be bad!

I used some insulators from a company called Tech Products www.novibes.com They were the universal style mounts and they come in a variety of sizes and stiffness (axial load ratings). Be sure to look at the Short Hub models as they require a support structure thickness of 4.8mm. These are the ones I used since that was close tho the thickness of my frame. I estimated the weight of my cab (don't forget the roof rack and gear) and divided by the number of mounts to come up with a axial load rating. they have another style mount that might work well for you but I can't remember the name so look through the sight carefully. You get a substancial savings if you buy I think 24 pieces.
