Borla exaust in my 95 FZJ80

As you will see in the pictures below, my stock exaust was in sad shape. It had a leaky muffler and the center bracket was broken (only replaceable with a muffler). After some searching I discoverd very few aftermarket, stainless, and bolt on replacements. Borla is one of the few that does make one. The #14590 is a cat back unit that I can now say is bolt on.
The hardest part of the process was getting the old unit off without destroying the cat. It took me close to 3 hours to get the old one off and one hour to put the new one on. You will need a few extra parts if your exaust is a bit rusty, 3 new muffler mounts, 12 6X1 nuts, some stainless 6mm fender washers for the muffler mounts, new bolts for the connection with the cat, and a new gasket for the cat. While I was at it I also repalced the rear O2 sensor since I knew it wasn't coming off.

The rusted heap:

It's a little throaty relative to the stock one but given the condition of the stock unit, overall it seems to make less noise. It also seems to be a little lighter.

On a side note, my rear storage unit was slowed down as I am waiting on some slides and hinges. So I tackled a few dead bulbs in the dash and the center diff switch.
The wife is out of town with the dogs this weekend and parts are arriving, so I should have some more time on the rear unit.

Cool! Looks good dude! Is there any way to not have to use their tip? Can you just leave it off? It's a little too much chrome for me.

I suppose you could have another welded up or some high temp paint would do the trick. It doesn't stand out that much .

Thanks for sharing that. My exhaust is in good shape, but I wish it wasn't, because I wouldn't mind a little throater sound. But not the buzzzzzzzzz on the highway that I got with my old truck. How does it sound on the highway compared to stock?

I too probably would lose the tip. The whole set up looks great, but the tip kind of looks more sport's car, than Expedition Land Cruiser, but that's a small detail.

One of the most important questions is how's the clearance? Is it any worse, better or the same as stock? I ask because the pipe after the cat seems to turn downward more than stock, but I'm not looking at my stock pipe right now.

Again, thanks for sharing. If/when I need a new set up, I'm thinking I'll go with the Borla kit too.

I noticed this morning at start up I have some rattling against something, I believe it to be the body. When I push up a bit on the bumper it stops. It also stops once everything is warmed up. I am going to hold off on tracking it down until my lift is installed. I hope it won't interfear with a Slee rear bumper.

I don't feel clearance after the cat is any worse, both systems have to go under the frame rail at the same point.

IIRC, Borla claims that the fancy tip actually has a function, increasing exhaust velocity or something and thus increasing power. Not sure if it's hype or not, but it certainly is a complex piece to manufacture if done only for looks.

Did you say hype?
