Box Rocket '03 DC Tacoma Build

Here's the "Final" solution for the intake. Noise levels are back to normal, intake temps are still pretty low (87* on my 30 mile commute today). Power and mpg seem unchanged. This should offer a reasonable amount of protection from water and dust with the screened inlet, and the drain should release any moisture that makes it into the tube.
.
This photo shows how I had to shave the corner of one of the elbows. Kinda sloppy looking in this photo before I cleaned up the JB Weld.

Profile. You can see the upturned inlet location which is just below the top of the fender so it's about as high and protected as I can make it without an external snorkel. It has a cap with several drilled holes and a screen behind that to keep small rocks etc out. The lower drain at the low point has a cap also with just a small hole to release any moisture but still keep water from going in. It's still all up and out of the way of the tires and totally covered by the fender so nothing is visible. Last step is to build some new inner fenders.

Awesome! I have a 1 gen tundra and have been looking at ways of moving my intake as I have already hydro locked one engine, only question is do u feel that the air in the fender is clean? Or so is dusty from being sturred up by the tires, currently mine is snorkeled straight up from the air box but the idea of a drain is brilliant

This location is probably a bit dusty until I get some inner fenders made. I don't know where the stock intake is routed on a Tundra but the Tacoma is routed to behind the fender just like this. So I think with some inner fenders to block some stuff the air should be reasonably "clean".

I would be mildly concerned that the cap, even with the holes, is restrictive at large throttle openings. Do you have a vacuum gauge to put on it?

I'd connect the gauge to the airbox pre-filter, and run it under the windscreen wipers while doing some full throttle pulls in third gear.

It's possible there is some restriction, but I've done 75+ miles on the highway today and a bunch around town and seat of the pants feel is that power is still good.

When we were building rally cars I did a bunch of testing on the WRX intake before the airbox, and it was amazing how easy it was to restrict power.

Maybe a quick check with the calculated horsepower with the ultragauge with the cap on and off, having reset the ECU before each test?

Otherwise, love your truck, as always.

Ya the tundra intake was in the front corner of the wheel opening as well. Just a suggestion what I did on
Mine was a deck plate mod to the air box for highway then when I get into the bush I screw the deck plate cover in that way I get good air flow on the highway ad run through the snorkel in the bush

Yeah I hear ya. I had an Evo and was doing lots of little things to eeek all the power out of it that I could. However, the Taco isn't a race truck ;)

Similar to the Tacoma. But the tacoma has a stock intake tube that runs back through the fender well about halfway to the firewall so a little farther back than the Tundra it sounds like. Having it closer to the firewall should be better in the off-chance I drop into water and dip the nose of the truck under the surface. But I do try to avoid water these days.

Got a chance to add another couple coats of clear coat to the fenders yesterday. In the end, I think there are 9 coats of clear over the color. Overall I think they turned out pretty good considering that it's all rattle can. Saved some money and still looks ok.

one last photo directly from the side of the fender so you can see that the new intake is totally hidden. You can just barely see the bottom of the drain tube on the snorkel, but it's up and out of the way.

These are 2-stage rattlecan colormatched paint. Turned out pretty nice for rattle can IMO, but I need a higher quality clearcoat. I'll probably respray them later in the summer with some better clear and call it good.

Hey Adam, what brand color match spray paint did you use?

P.S. now that it's painted, it's growing on me. Not my cup-o-tea but it looks clean.

If it were mine I'd lose the cap. Serves no real purpose, other than an air restriction IMO.

1st Gen Tundra, intake's on the passenger side behind the fender.

Using a torch to flatten out some 3" Sch. 40 PVC pipe on the end, the intake can be raised to a point as high as the dash -

It is PPG brand paint that I had mixed at a local auto body supply store.

I hear ya. I guess my reason for the cap was to limit the amount of crap that can get thrown into the intake from the tires, but still keep it as "open" as possible. Maybe I'm overthinking it.

Ha that didn't take long to come back out of the cab :)

How about just a piece of 1/4-1/8" hardware cloth over the end instead of the cap

Fenders look great for being rattle canned. Very good! I really dig them. Gives your truck a much more aggressive look too. Looks like it allows plenty of room for that intake too. Good work.
