First owie

Well, I finaly got my first owie beyond desert pin striping. Looking for a campsite in Turkey creek I drove up into an area that has several deep wash outs across the road. I apparently caught the right rear box corner when dropping off a ledge. :(

Luckily when I noticed it after getting home a quick couple sledge hammer taps and a block of wood straightened it right out.

Ready for more adventure abuse.

Maybe I should work on a rear skid plate to protect that area.

A few more from last week's Redfield canyon pig hunting camp just to keep this thread current.

Hi Brad, I think you need a sign out front that says "The Lodge is OPEN". Looks like great times.

On a side note what do you do with all that muddy canvas at the end of the trip. No seriously, what is the cleaning procedure and how long does it take.

After a muddy trip it's a real pain. I have to take each section and open it up and hang it on my wall. I just use a pressure hose to wash the mud off and then let it dry either outside if nice weather or in my garage. I don't worry about scrubbing every mud stain off the lower vinyl flaps, I just hose off the big chunks.

It's usually not too bad but this last trip was a real goo fest.

I guess if you want to play you gota pay. :sombrero:

Found my wind limit :)

These shots were taken up on Alstrom Point overlooking Lake Powell last weekend. I'll post up more in a trip report thread.

To net it out, I camped up on the point when a storm front was moving in. It was forecast to only have 30-40 mph winds so I wasn't concerned. Nature had other plans for me. :)

I was hit with 60-70 mph wind gusts that first ripped off the upper tropical roof canvas and broke the supporting stays. I was able to grab the canvas and get it stowed away just as another gust ripped all my porch guy ropes out and threw my support poles more than 50 yards over the back of the tent.

Then down to just the basic clam-shell the wind started to tip the trailer off the ground so I had to quickly add 8 guy ropes to keep the trailer from being blown over. To say the least it was an interesting evening.:Wow1:

After the wind, notice the missing porch, upper canvas roof, and all the added guy ropes.

But all is well that ends well...the calm after the storm.

Wow Brad, sorry about the Safari top. I always liked the Safari top and wished mine would have come equipped with one. What a bummer. Great pics though.

Sorry to hear about the damage...

But on a lighter side your pictures truly reflect the same image time and time again..

and that is, that is what camping is all about!

Best wishes,

wow .. every time i see your pics i get so jealous,, well finally its going to happen for me.. first 2 weeks of sept i will be heading to utah and colorado with 3 days planned at lake powell.. now.. almost all of my camping experiance has been northern ontario, but i have been from prince edward island, and out to banff alberta .. almost got taken out by a tornado once, lightning hit the tree 5 feet from my tent and luckily it crashed into the lake .. my tent colapsed from the wind, but i only broke one pole .. so prepapring for this trip to utah i have been wondering how you tie down when everything is rock.. ive never had to worry bout that before,, at the worst ive at least had a tree or somthing i could tie off too .. i was thinking i might have to make some heavy steel stakes and a sledge hammer to pound em in, now im thinkin a cordless hammer drill might be a good idea...

I wish I had a cordless drill and screw anchors! :sombrero:

I was lucky that the one side of the trailer that needed to be tied down had dirt to stake into. The front side was rock, hence the water and fuel cans piled with rocks for tie downs. The front of the trailer's tarp was tied to the 4Runner and down to the trailer front hitch for stability.

I wouldn't worry about your trip too much. This was a pretty unusual storm that would not be the norm. The beauty of the country is well worth any storm risk. :wings:

Um, one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. What's the roughest terrain you've taken her over? Can you fit all your gear in it when it's all stored for driving?
