Been working on the dash for awhile and the center console. I'm going to pull the wood and restore it next. But I decided it was time to step it into the current century as far as mapping and GPS goes. I wanted to be able to return it to stock, keep it looking clean, and easy to use. I got some RAM Mounts, Installed Hema Maps onto my iPad, and installed a Bad Elf GPS lightning connector. Everything works great together, fits nice and looks good.

After threadserts failures, broken bolts, stripped threads. Hopefully this will work. Sick of breaking the starter bolt on this motor. I drilled out the hole, hammered a hardened nut into place and welded it solid. If this breaks again. I'm shooting the engine.

A new motor of GM may be purchased today. More power, turbo.

Ok, so I bought this. Its basically drop in since its the same engine just bigger with a turbo.
2002 6.5L 145K miles. Out of a short bus. I'll probably need to ride short bus for putting myself through this again. atleast its bolt in. I'll be swapping on a set of 6.2 heads, doing head studs, and put it back together.

2002 GMC 6.5L Turbo Diesel. You'll notice this is a bus engine, so the turbo and intake are sandwiched into the valley of the engine, making a very nice compact set up. I'll be ditching the electronic injection pump for my "dumb" injection pump. Paint it and throw it in. Paid $700. I'll pull my old motor and sell it. Now that its fixed.

Do you have the bracket that mounts to the back of the starter and the block if you don't that is why you are breaking bolts it has to be on there it is a bent piece of angle iron

Yes I do have it. I bought a new one since when I got the engine it didn't have one.
I had a buddy Tig weld and distress the bolt hole with silica broze. We welded a new nut into the hole. Since doing it last week i haven't had a single issue.
FINALLY!
Been driving it all week. Other than a few tiny oil leak (drops) from the oil plug it's been perfect.
But alteast I can sell the engine once.my new one gets here without feeling bad. It runs great. Has great mileage. And loads of torque.
At least the new engine will be bolt in. No fabrication needed. I'll probably add an intercooler later on.

So Its about ready to come out. Just 5 transmission bolts to take it out.

Majorly bummed, my "new" motor arrived. Its been dropped and damaged. The shipper didn't do a good job with crating and packaging it. The oil pan is all smashed in and I'm sure the pickup tube as well. Damn.
I'm sure those parts are not too hard to get, but that's going to delay the install.

They only weigh 701 lbs and that from GM's manual I think a lot of people confuse these with the 350 diesel

That's not too bad when you consider dollar cost average IMO! Here's what I found for the comparison, both from the Engine manufacturer! Considering one is $700 used and the other is $9k not including tax of your state and delivery, I would say it was a good purchase for only 190lbs of weight for his project concerns and desires. I personally love watching this thread and say keep going with what floats your boat.
The R2.8 would surely be my vote for a ground-up restore. However, think of the money saved that can go into performance upgrades on this 6.5L??!!!! It's a solid engine, super reliable, and simple engine to maintain with almost unlimited potential for upgrades.

I have a Cummins in my 2013 Ram Crew Cab Laramie. I absolutely love the engine. Its super reliable.
I've looked at the R2.8 a lot. But the price of it, plus adapters and all the other stuff I'll need would put me over $10K. Just not enough bang for the buck. Its a great engine, but it lacks the power I'd like. Besides, the 6.5 will have no electronics to run it. One reason I wanted an old diesel anyway. I want to be able to run it anywhere. Plus with the military injection pump that I already have, I can mix used oil and transmission fluid into my tank. And it'll burn it without any questions. I've been doing it with the 6.2 since I installed it. My fuel costs are pretty cheap when I drive it. These are things you can't do with a newer designed motor. The 6.5 / 6.2 isn't much larger physically than a 4.2L, so it makes a great swap.

Yeah, like I said, IMO you have a great project going and it will run forever with ease of maintenance. Keeps me interested. Lots of work but when its done, it should be the last time you have to worry about it.
