This decreased the tools required to remove the skid plate to two (9/16" socket or wrench and a 13 mm socket). If this does not do the trick, I can always grind the piece of pipe off and return to the flat head allen bolts. So far so good!

Exactly like that.
The wheeling I do in Eastern Canada should not cause an issue with the bolt protection getting caught on obstacles on the trail hard enough to bend it over so you cannot access the bolt? The pipe ring if you will is approximately 0.140" plus the weld, I'd have to hang up pretty hard to bend it. If it does, I'll just grind them off and weld a new one on. No big deal.
