and most of all Bug Out now and earn a living being mobile on a small island like OOH Tasmania :)

Tassie......you've already bugged out. Haha.

This is for sale in a car yard down the road from me at the moment. Unfortunately the nuclear power pack must have been removed before sale cause this one blows diesel Troopy smoke and yet the one I saw on TV made a cool stealthy electric humm ...... working 6x6 was retained but the zombie shields are only made of plastic sheet....you only get what you pay for I guess. Haha.

In case anyone was wondering, it was one of the props from the TV series Terra Nova but I was probably the only nerd that ever watched it. All the vehicles including 4x4s, 6x6s and bikes went under the hammer a couple of weeks back.

I've been reading some of this but got to thinking of the effect of EMP's on vehicles that weren't running. Did some searching and found this document http://www.empcommission.org/docs/A2473-EMP_Commission-7MB.pdf

Here's what I found...

Automobiles were subjected to EMP environments under both engine turned off and
engine turned on conditions. No effects were subsequently observed in those automobiles
that were not turned on during EMP exposure. The most serious effect observed on running
automobiles was that the motors in three cars stopped at field strengths of approximately
30 kV/m or above. In an actual EMP exposure, these vehicles would glide to a
stop and require the driver to restart them. Electronics in the dashboard of one automobile
were damaged and required repair. Other effects were relatively minor. Twenty-five
automobiles exhibited malfunctions that could be considered only a nuisance (e.g.,
blinking dashboard lights) and did not require driver intervention to correct. Eight of the
37 cars tested did not exhibit any anomalous response.

Based on these test results, we expect few automobile effects at EMP field levels below
25 kV/m. Approximately 10 percent or more of the automobiles exposed to higher field
levels may experience serious EMP effects, including engine stall, that require driver
intervention to correct. We further expect that at least two out of three automobiles on the
road will manifest some nuisance response at these higher field levels. The serious malfunctions
could trigger car crashes on U.S. highways; the nuisance malfunctions could
exacerbate this condition. The ultimate result of automobile EMP exposure could be triggered
crashes that damage many more vehicles than are damaged by the EMP, the consequent
loss of life, and multiple injuries.

I suspect that if this is true then other electronic items that aren't on should survive as well such as laptops, phones, etc.

I did a little reading in the document and it lookslike the biggest danger regarding vehicles vs. EMP is not the vehicle itself but the effect on traffic lights, gas pumps, cameras, etc.

I was up in Seattle a few years back when a huge windstorm knocked the area back into the non-electric era. Even though power was down you'd still see people sticking their debit cards into ATMs and other devices that were dead as doorknobs. Be sure to have a stash of cash in your BOB

Very good item there Jim. We were in Ruidoso when the Little Bear Fire kicked up. It knocked out a major phone hub and lots of places were only able to take cash as their system couldn't dial out.

Go underground to survive the future. We are in a Sun Cycle of 12,500 years. On 12-21-2012 this system we have lived in is going to end. Giant tidal waves will destroy everything on the surface of this planet. The Sun will cook the surface and the jet stream will blow everything away. This is whats coming...we have until the time of the three days of red sky. Then Mother Earth will shake these fleas off her back and the Forth World will be no more.

Whoa, like serious bummer! But won't the giant tidal waves flood your underground lair too?

High up in the mountains sea fossils everywhere

I've always wondered about the high ground to avoid the floods many are freaked out about or changes to the plants surface, anyway, as I explore the high ground I'm finding sea fossils everywhere even in caves, oh well I'll just let others worry and freak out while I enjoy day!

Later, as I did after Y2K I'll buy all those goodies that won't be needed for pennies on the $10. dollars.:ylsmoke:

I thought that fossils found at higher elevations are due to the old sea beds being pushed up due to plate movement and collision with another plate, but I'm no geologist.... :archaeolo

Man, I'm really glad I have a couple of longboards and a good wetsuit (it's cold here in dec.). I hope the tidal waves have a good A-frame shape:sombrero:

Not only is geology not my thing but I have trouble typing and correctly spelling "higher", sigh. :sombrero:

Anyhow, back on topic.

I know that there may exist an "ideal" B.O.V. but in reality we all have to work with what we own. Hopefully it is at least a 4x4 with modest ground clearance and a good sized fuel tank.

Just copy and paste this list and add your ideas to it:

  1. If you do not keep your vehicle loaded, have your gear organized so as to be able to leave home in 20 minutes or less
  2. Make sure all normal vehicle maintenance is up to date and learn how to perform the tasks yourself
  3. Finish all of those vehicle mods and repairs on your "To Do" list
  4. Get out and explore all of the local roads, bypasses and alternate routes such as railroad rights of way, riverbeds, etc.
  5. Learn how to navigate your streets so well that you don't need lights, street signs or even your GPS
