Building My Overland Tacoma: Plans, Progress, Perplexions

(I am looking at a custom made flat bed and mounting a "custom" made camper to it.)

So what are peoples thoughts on the flex of the truck frame and the install of a flatbed?

My concern is that a flatbed would not flex like the factory composite bed, thus causing the frame to flex in a different way/place. Although having a camper in the bed would itself change how the frame would flex, so I am not sure it is something to be concerned about.

I just know the big camping rigs have three point flexible mounting, and while the Tacoma is a small truck, it does have a fair amount of flex. Is it enough to be concerned about?

I have been making some calls to this place here. :peepwall:

Very interested in what you decide...I talked with them last year...about getting a 5'9" bed on my shortbed tacoma...the extra 9" wouldn't extent much past the factory bumper but would give a little extra for a custom camper...
Will be following...:)

I am looking to get some snow tires for this winter.

Thinking about going with pizza cutters, any problems with 235/85 on the factory rims? I know they have been installed before, they are just really skinny, and I want to make sure they work okay.

yup, they fit. I'm running 235/85 16 duratracs, they are great in the winter, you can even stud them if needed. I've had them on glare ice (even out ice racing 2H and 4H), even with out the studs they hold pretty well.

Just read about 60 pages of this thread over the last few days. Thanks for a good read, and safe travels!

Looks naked!! Best of luck in your new endeavor - bet it will be great - and like the other I will be keeping both eyes peeled on her!! You are an inspiration - thank you!!

I am getting started - but a long way to go!! http://www.flickr.com/photos/netdep/6160982918/in/photostream

Thanks ND.

I feel like I have somewhat abandoned this thread over the last two years. In part because I have her built to a point where not much is happening, but also because I have been spending most of my free time researching a FWC and putting info onto that build thread.

When I started this thread I was new to forums, and now I feel this thread is something of an information mess. I am doing things differently on my FWC thread, with all the pertinent info linked on the first post. So I admire anybody who wades through this thread to glean info. Also, most of the early photos are lost, the hosting company went away and I was using a borrowed computer and camera.

I guess I am just saying I am glad this thread can still be helpful.

Speaking of inspiration, I really like this photo of your rig.

(Can not grab it, so here is the Link.)

Reminds me of a photo I did of Hadley shortly after I picked her up in Montana.

But what I really like is your caption.

The background just screamed at me to stop and snap a couple!

Thanks ND for inspiring me this morning. :)

On a side note, I really like the color of your truck. If I had had a choice, I would have been very tempted to go with the dark grey.
