I know I am going and I know my younger son is going...not sure about the older boy yet...
I am also not sure of a leave town time yet...or where I will camp...or what I will do on sunday...wow for someone as plan happy as I normally am this thing really is up in the air :)
The only thing I know for sure is that I am signed up to help with ham radio comm at the event...I will be on the lookout for folks from adventure4x4.net and expeditionportal.com when it comes to prime camping spots since I don't know the area at all.
I am also watching for any caravan info for anyone leaving Friday from Az.

While camping out in Mule canyon last Saturday night.. i noticed one thing. Calico was filthy again. It was a damn shame. The spot we like to camp in was trashed with a old tv and tons of shotgun shells, some even brand new in a box!! The fire in the fire pit was still going!!!! I truly found out what i think the cause of all the trash is. It's not the 4 wheelers or the dirt bike guys.. its damn shooters. Im not for land closures.. but these guys need to be stopped. I think that shooting should be prohibited in this area, because they obviously can't follow the pack it in, pack it out rule that we do. So guess what, we get to pick up a ton of glass and crap again at the cleanup. They make the mess and we pick it up. It just pisses me off.

Why can't they pick up the crap they shoot? :violent-smiley-031:

as an offroader and a shooter i just have one quick comment about this. you say you are against land closures, then why is allright to close it to all shooters, since a few morons leave their trash, but its not allright to close off areas to offroad use, because a few morons cant stay on the trails or pick up their trash?? i fully agree that these idiots need to quit being so careless and pick up their trash. but i dont agree that the area needs to be closed. its kind of like gun ban, or vehicle land use, laws...where does it stop?? i dont think that anyone needs full auto weapons. but if you allow them to ban full auto (which they have) then theyre going to say " well noone really NEEDS semi automatics". then theyre going to say, "well noone really needs bolt action, or pump, or single shot". notice the pattern here. its the same thing for land use, whether it be motorcycle, atv, 4x4, or shooting...its all the same. where (and when) does it stop?? i love shooting, offroading, and riding dirtbikes. i pick up my trash (shells, targerts, etc.), i stay on the trails and roads, and i try my best to minimize damage to those trails and roads (minimize spinning of tires, watch out for soft areas, etc., etc.) i dont want to get into a pissing match with anyone over this, its just an issue i feel strongly about. end of rant.

on another note. i will be out there for the cleanup as well with myself, and possibly a friend of mine and his scout II. as someone else said, ill be keeping an eye out for other members of this board or TTORA, ive never been to calico before so the area is all new to me.

rigwelderstaco,

I understand i came off sounding like a jerk about wanting to shut it down to shooters. I apologize. I was irritated the day i posted after seeing that trash out there. I just couldn't believe that they didn't care about the area they were shooting in. I also couldn't believe that they were shooting deep into the night and early morning. It just really upset me. Especially when you hear a richochet near your camp. You are absolutely correct in what you are saying. I know its always the few morons that blow it for the rest of the group. Maybe instead of shutting the area down to shooters, which is always the greater end of the spectrum and drastic idea... maybe post FINE signage if caught littering?

Just a side note, i've been born and raised around guns. Been hunting, been trap and skeet shooting, have my own gun etc. Im not against guns, i was just pissed i saw all that out there.

understandable. believe me, it irritates the living crap out of me when i see that crap. its not that difficult to pick up the stuff you shoot at and your shells. everybody, including me, is always gonna end up leaving something. but its the people who dont make ANY effort to cleanup that annoy me, for that reason. when stuff is left behind it gives antis more reason to shut places down. in my personal case, i dont like walking around cleaning up my trash, so i take the lazy way out. i use steel swing targets. stick em in the ground, and when im done, pick it up and throw it in the truck, no trash. my shells i always try to pick them all up anyways because i reload. i am all for enforcement of the laws. fine, confiscate their stuff, etc., if they break the law. the problem is that most gov. agencies dont enforce it. they would rather shut it down entirely then to put the effort out to enforce their rules. ive grown up with guns, hunting, and shooting as well, and i would like for my kids (one day) to be able to still do all the things that ive gotten to do, whether that be hunting and shooting or offroading and riding dirtbikes.

Calico Cleanup Poker Run Cancelled

*IMPORTANT*

February, 1, 2008

We received this today from the BLM Barstow Field Office.

"Unfortunately the permit for the Calico Poker Run has been denied. The BLM resource staff said that the poker run course is in a limited use area and runs through critical tortoise habitat. In order to permit this type of use they are going to require a complete environmental assessment rather than a categorical exclusion (CX). The CX means that there is no affect. They cannot sign off and say there is no affect without further consultation with the US Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Services. This is a lengthy process that takes a minimum of six months."

The clean up will go on as scheduled. The poker run on Sunday has been canceled as of today’s date. The Calico Clean Up committee wants to encourage a trail run after the raffle on Saturday afternoon or perhaps on Sunday for those wishing to explore the beautiful Calico Mountains.

This is a minor setback but our goal is to remain focused on the clean up and work closely with BLM to maintain and keep the Calico area open for access to all recreationalists. We appreciate your volunteer efforts and sincere cooperation to make this a successful event.

Should you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please direct them to the calico clean up committee at www.calicocleanup.com

I agree that we need to figure out what we are doing with regards to a plot of land to rest our weary heads as we are only 10 days away. I have taken the liberty of checking out a couple of prelimenary options.

It seems that there is no concise location for camping on the Calico Cleanup website with the exception of Mule Canyon. I know that there are campsites at Calico Ghost Town which have an $18 a night fee. I'm not too sure this would be the ideal spot for us since there is a Civil War Reenactment going on the same weekend. For the sheer sake of having the option I have tried contacting Calico to see if there is anything available. Their phones don't seem to be working so I will try emailing them.

I have no aversion to dry camping and it seems as though there will be some tinkle towers (a.k.a. Port-A-Potty) available to us for those who are too shy to let their love flow like a mountain stream in the open.

I have also sent an email off to the Calico Cleanup organizers to see what they might suggest for our group as well.

I will post replies when I receive them.
