Rich,

I can't tell you not to camp in the dry lake bed. I can only discourage it. Mule Canyon offers really great spots; just get in there early. Hope this helps!

Mark

This is the reply I received from Mark at Calico Cleanup. I don't consider the dry lake bed an option since it is discouraged....and will likely be windy.

OK, how about a vehicle count and a camp site needs estimation for Mule Canyon?

Then, we figure out what we need and then we dispatch a lead scout to secure an area for us ahead of time to establish our camp?

Opinions? Volunteers?

Sounds good. I counted six ExPo trucks on the roster and I know some independent guys coming up as well. However an actual headcount would be ideal.

I usually camp here. Make a left at the fork about 1 mile in to Mule Canyon (usually right before all the RV's).. head up toward the top of the mtn (you'll climb up one small pavement hill), and stay right the whole time, right before it climbs into the canyon and gets hard, make a right where you see a small camping area, with a dip and over a ridge there is another one with a fire pit facing to the east. I usually pic the second one. Great place away from the crowds. "usually".

CLEANUP - is the dry lakebed, the road to the right is Mule Cyn Rd.

BLUE DOTS - Calico ghost town. Stay clear unless you wanna get chased by some old dude with a shotgun. Its the war re-inactment days. I stopped over there last time after the cleanup and it was a nightmare. Cool to see though. I think was the only one dressed in our era.

Others choose to go all the way through Mule canyon to the backside and camp on the other side of the mtn range.

Thanks SOCAL! This might be the most viable location thusfar since it seems that the bulk of the crowds will be at Mule.

Sorry you can't make it either.

Yeah it sucks i can't make it.

Let me know if you guys do decide to head to this campsite. I can make a small route on google earth for you guys, so you can see it better.

I've been sidelined for a while with a literal PITA but I'm still planning on going to be there for the clean up. I will check back for a consensus as to where the camp will be.

Camp Confirmation

The ExPo crew will be camping in Mule Canyon saturday night after the cleanup, see attached map for details. If we have chaos at camp (there will be loads of people out there) our alternate rally point will be the Mule Canyon trailhead at Calico road and then we'll take it from there.

ExPo Comm Plan:
CB 22, Alt Freq 18
FRS channel 10, Alt Freq 14
2M ?

ExPo Gear List:
Trash bags :)
Gloves
Food
Tasty Beverages
Firewood!!!

... and all the other stuff you always bring on the trail :costumed-smiley-007

Thanks to SOCALFJ for posting the map!

For some reason i couldn't get google earth to do what i wanted. Here goes nothin... like 6 pics. Use these combined with the larger overall shot i posted earlier and you should be good to go. Just remember if you climb up a small pavement section then your headed the right way. Make a right not long after that (maybe 500 feet) and your real close. Camp is just over on the ridge and there are two spots. 1 with a Arch and one with a view of the canyon. I also uploaded the .kml file if that will work for anyone.

Hope this works, i never rely on this, but use it as a scout of sort before trips.
