Well.... its quieter, more comfortable on the road, has more range, etc... but my Jeep was my baby and I'm pretty sure a million times more capable off road but then again the Jeep was overbuilt for everything I ever did with it. But it always accomplished its mission of getting me to and from remote places in the AZ and California deserts safely and alone. Both are fantastic vehicles and I'm honored to call and to have called them mine.

There is quite a mix of minimalists all the way to the other extreme in this thread. We tend to be on the lighter side, getting away with our kitchen box, small folding table, chairs, tent, 3.5" REI mattresses, an awning as well as our mountain bikes.
With a 3 month old added to the mix, wife and I have contemplated getting some kind of RV, but when it comes down to it, it's hard to beat the efficiency of throwing our camp boxes in the 4Runner and going wherever we want without the limitations of towing offroad and dealing with 55 mph towing speedlimits in California. I used to have a Toyota pickup with a Fourwheel Pop Up camper, but hated taking the unit on and off the truck and equally hated leaving it on the truck fulltime. Worse yet, it seems the moment we would get to camp and get everything leveled and in camping mode, we would want to drive somewhere. Never again will I own an RV that can't be disconnected from the main vehicle. We have looked at everything from tent trailers & A-liners to jumping jack/RTT style trailers and hardsided RPods...nothing really seems to check all of our boxes. So until that time, we seem to be doing okay with our basic setup.
Yep hear ya. All our camping before kids was for Sailboat Regattas so we towed the boat. With kid #1 we managed to keep racing the boat for a couple of years but time vs kid etc became an issue so we sold the racing boat. Then realized we packed all our camping crap into the boat! Dog kid and often grandma aka the baby sitter we needed the trailer to pack the gear. So Costco life time tent trailer which has been awesome!!! Love it.. House renovation project no big deal dump runs etc and camping!!! Win win. A dedicated RV only trailer I couldn't justify the cost but trailer we use all year long for lots of things WIN WIN. The only snag now is wife tired of visiting cold places hmmm. Getting a nice little heater for her hope that cures some of the push back and we can still hit some of the great places I love going too.
The ideal rig? Probably a used 4dr Tacoma or used new Canyon with a flat bed FWC and the little Life Time trailer as over flow toy and crap hauler and kid bunk house when they get older. The truck gets 3rd car status at home and a beater cheap car is my every day vehicle etc.
TIME!!! Time from lets go and planning time! To Time of packing to go! Then Time on the road! Then time back home and TIME to unpack is the enemy of just not doing it period with two kids!
Next week or two I'm spreading all our gear out on the floor in the garage and working out a packing storage plan so that TIME factor to be packed and gone is down to just tossing duffel bags of clothes couple of ice chests and hooking up the trailer and GOING!!!!

My wife and I were there in July 14 as well! We stayed in Lake City on the 3rd, so we could watch the parade before heading up the mountain on the 4th. We only stayed on the loop a couple nights this time, and then ran up to Taylor Park for the rest of the time.
Just past Rose's Cabin on the way to Engineer Pass:
Henson Creek was pretty full at the time, to the point we almost had to yell to hear one another if more than about 10 feet apart!

Sounds like we need to do a better job planning next year ! Would have loved to meet you guys up there in the San Juans. Its too hectic around town on the Fourth here, it was nice to watch the fireworks in Silverton and then head out to the mountains.
