XJ, Looks like you had the right idea though. :sombrero:

Maybe try a longer exposure and or higher ISO to pick up more the ambient light in the background. With higher light sensitivity you might need to tone down the foreground lighting a bit to keep it balanced.

Not sure if the foreground lighting was from a flash or light painting with a hand light. Either way you can turn down the flash output or light paint for a shorter period of time.

I'm with you on the it takes practice. Some of mine come out great and many do not. :elkgrin:

Wow, that is a long exposure. What ISO and aperture were you using?

With a large F-stop and ISO up to at least 400 I would expect a lot more ambient light to be picked up.

Most of my attempts at shots like this are at F2.8 or maybe down to F4 with an ISO around 800 and an exposure of only about 30 seconds. My light painting would be with an LED head lamp for only about 5-10 seconds.

I'm surprised with a 12 min exposure you didn't capture a ton more light??

Here's one using f2.8, ISO 200 for 25 seconds:

There was a lot of cloud cover and no stars could be seen. I was at F2.8 but I cant remember what i had the ISO at. I think it was at 100 but honestly I cant remember and I was focusing too much on trying to use the flashlight to light up the jeep enough so I could see it in the view finder to try and set the camera on the tripod in the right position in the shot. I think that the ISO is where I messed it up. I tried the shot three times, but this is the only one that did not have streaks of light from my light painiting in it.
