Saw these pics posted up by GoBig on the OX12 thread. I didn't catch the class so I am wondering what it is that they are demonstrating here? Anybody catch the class?

It's the old "Land Rover kite" trick. You need a lot of wind though. Looks like they're using an FJ40 Land Cruiser for a tail.

My guess would be how to upright a vehicle, the cruiser rigged to keep the defender from going too far and rolling on to the other side.

When righting a vehicle, if you run a strap over the top and connect it to the chassis at the "bottom" it will apply more of a rolling effect and at the same time some lift which will result in less propensity for the vehicle to slide on it's side before it rolls over to it's wheels.

You may be right but I thought I read that it was a demonstration on how to access the underside of the vehicle for maintenance/repair? They were not rolling or righting it but tipping it up to get at the bottom?

Yes an over the top strap is the best and easiest if the option is available. Depending on how the vehicle is lying and the type of vehicle it’s not always possible of course so you need to show alternatives. If I understand what they are showing in these pictures then this is not one of them that I would choose or recommend.

From the pictures it looks like they are just trying to rip the cage off that 110 but I want to make sure I understand what they are demonstrating before I comment.

It looks like they are putting it on its side gently to teach the rollover recovery. The one vehicle making sure it doesn't flop too hard. I haven't seen too many recoveries that after the vehicle hit the wheels it kept going

I don't think they are demonstrating a vehicle recovery. I may be wrong though which is why I would like somebody who was at the class to explain what the demonstration was actualy supposed to be teaching?

I missed this demonstration as well. I can't figure out what the pictures are all about.

The recovery class done with the disco covered roll overs very well.

I look forward to an explanation of these pictures.

I'm pretty sure that caption was just for kicks. If anyone actually does that to get underside access for maintenance, Bill Engvall has a sign just for them

I really, really hope that is the case and that we didn't do something as stupid as actually suggest this is something that people could/should do in the field in this way. I wasn't there and I didn't see or hear what they were saying.

Maybe my sarcasm detector wasn't working when I saw them but I was just a little concerned when I ran across the pics with that caption. Bad enough that they have rigged it in an opposing fashion such as they were lucky they didn't pull what is only a lightweight cage structure off the vehicle. If they had suggested you might go underneath it in that fashion to work on it then I would have to seriously question what we are teaching here.

Yeah, me either, though I could see it happening on a steep side slope.

I'd say that pretty much answers the question, though I'd want some spare tires or something under the wheels so there's no chance of it coming down on me.

I would say the description was sarcastic...it's my main form of communication, so it's fairly easy to identify. Looks like a pretty thorough PPI.

Seriously? You'd get under that, rigged in that fashion? Couple of tires is not going to keep that thing off your head when something lets go and that comes down.

Old joke pic but I would get under this before I would get anywhere near that set up. Heck, even one balanced on a hi-lift like we discussed in the other thread is more stable.
