Canadians... What's it really like?

IMO Canada's weapon laws are perfect. One can legally buy and use hunting firearms, everything else should be for military use only. There are numerous studies worldwide that prove handguns and automatic weapons have no place in developed societies.

You probably not too familiar with Canadian Firearms Act. Canadian gun laws are confusing and illogical. . It escapes me why I can't legally carry .357 or .44 revolver when I'm far out in wilderness. Not to mention that there are other studies saying that more gun restriction often leads to more violent crime.

You're right, let's ask the leaders of the following countries what they think of disarming their "developed" citizens:

-In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 30 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up & exterminated. The USSR had total gun control, but the government did all the killing. Stalin killed millions of "developed" citizens.

-In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

-Germany established gun control in 1938, and from 1939-1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated by a "developed" Hitler Socialist regime.

-China established gun control in 1935. From 1948-1952, 60 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Mao Tse Tung killed millions and they controlled all the guns.

-Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

-Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

-Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

I'd like to read about these studies you've advised us that show that pistols and full-auto weapons have NO place in so-called "developed" societies. Help us understand.

i know it's not nice, but i have no other frame of reference,i could call them hyppocrites but that sounds rude.they have no problem throwing other gun owners under the bus to protect their own interest, and that's so unfortunate.

As I understand it from a good friend who is a geologist , if you get a prospectors license you can carry a handgun in the bush.
That said handguns are mostly useless against grizzlies unless it's a .454 casul.
I Carry bear bangers when I'm mountain biking in the back country .
Never had to use them .
Statistically you don't need to carry a gun in Canada to protect yourself.

The city of Surrey in Bc is however has shootings due to Hindi drug wars every other day. Gun laws don't stop that.
That said full auto has no purpose for hunting or target practice and I'm glad we don't have that here.
The big thing that separates us from our southern neighbours is our health care system and unified firearms laws.
No free health care , we pay a lot of taxes for our health care system because we are humane people.
If the us had better health care, identifying and helping people with mental problems there would be less mass shootings.
In Canada we keep guns out of the hands of mentally disturbed individuals fairly well.
Therefore less mass murder shootings.

For what's it worth I am an avid shooter , reloader and got my IPSC black badge in 1989.

i believe you can also get one if you are running a trap line.there is no law saying you can't carry a handgun, you need the cfo's permission, which they do not give.i may be mistaken but that's what i understand to be true.again,i may be mistaken. i've never looked into it.i use mine at the range and that's good enough for me.the gun laws up here are so convoluted it makes your head swim.even the cops are unsure what the laws are.they just charge you and let the judge sort it out.i heard a news story that the l gov. is looking to eliminate health care premiums.wishful thinking?

wow... do you actually think that you one can defend oneself against a government with a hand or automatic gun? That is a joke. Seriously, to think that the citizens of these countries were killed because there was gun control is atrocious.

I am not against guns, I am against the uncontrollable sale and ownership of highly sophisticated killing tools that have no other purpose than to kill humans in DEVELOPED countries. I am a hunter and do have a weapon license, own some hunting rifles and a shot gun. I would never even think that I can use any of my weapons for self defence against other people. I live in a city where the police is seconds away. If I were living in Yukon or Northern BC or somewhere wild I would probably own a shotgun for bear defence but that would be it. I have been in some pretty remote locations in both Ontario and eastern Canada and have never needed or wish I had any weapon to defend myself or my family.
All I can say is, thank God for the way Canada is...

So once again here we go, if you check the stats on crime in the US and canada you'll see clearly that the violent crime rate is higher in canada and the weapons of choice are knives, axes and anything sharp, so which is better, Being shot or stabbed? Sorry north boy but dead is dead no matter how you get there! And you can keep your precious government health care! Also before this gets too far out of hand, keep your politics to yourself before some lock happy moderator locks another thread!

What politics are you talking about, south boy? I am making a statement under a thread that talks about Canadian gun laws, not sure what your problem is. I prefer the way the Canadian laws are, you clearly prefer the American. The rest of the world, thankfully, is moving forward.

That statement is more political than pertinent to the thread, so keep it up and here's another thread that's going to get locked!

My statement is a reply to SigSense's statement that millions of people were killed in the Soviet Union, Turkey, Germany etc, because there was gun control in effect.

Yes and his statement was in reply to your statement about guns and politics, just leave it be so we can keep this thread open.

I thought the forum was for sharing opinions and thoughts.... Anyhow, I am done, I got no more to say. As I said in my first post in this thread - I think Canadian gun laws are great and we get by very well without carrying handguns and/or automatic rifles. The studies that I mentioned were based on how Australia and GB have faired since introducing stricter gun control.
