Yes, It can be visited year round.
The guide was $15 per hour (minimum 3 hours) plus $5 for each additional vehicle.
You can make arrangements in advance but there are plenty of guide waiting at the visitors center that you can hire on the spot.
There is a camp ground next to the visitors center and one at Spider Rock.

Man! Wildflowers and wild horses, llamas, river crossings, and all under the watchful eye of the Ancient Ones! Cool trip you guys! :arabia:

No problem go right a head.

Also we went in to the visitors center the afternoon before and just asked for a guide. She live right by the Visitors center and walked over to talk to us with in just a few minutes. They open at 8:00, but remember they do observe daylight savings time so they are on the same time as Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. Our guide had done a trip the evening after we talked to her (spur of the moment), so you are pretty much able to get one just about anytime the center is open.

Sorry if this is a repeat but are the guides a requirement to explore Navajo land? Do you guys have favorite guides that should be asked for in the future? Are they competing against each other for price?

Hope to join you guys out there some time. We had out of town guests that entire week :( so we couldn't go.

Yes, non-residents (Navajos included) are required to have guides. There is a guard shack at the access road to the canyon that was staffed once out of the 4 times we passed it that day, as well as a threatening sign as you drive in:

I don't think guide fees are negotiable, they are set by the Park Service. Additionally, we tipped our guide. Keep in mind these are some of the poorest people in this country who are trying to retain their culture by living in their homeland. I'd rather pay them for a tour than see them opening up casinos like most of the other tribes have resorted to.

I finally got around to uploading my GPS tracks to TOPO, there IS an road exiting the top of Canyon del Muerto, actually 2 of them:

Excellent info Alex, thanks.

can you send me the Topo coordinates/route? I have the same software. Might have to make that trip one of these weekends.

Hey Alex

Dunno if you remember me or not but we did Tuweap and the AZ Strip a number of years ago together. I've always wanted to run Canyon De Chelly....would you by any chance have another trip under consideration?

Alia, I emailed you the track file, hopefully it didn't end up in your spam folder.

Of course I remember you, Robert! That was a great trip, one that I would definately like to do again.

I probably won't get out to to Canyon de Chelly again for a while, this was my 3rd visit in the past year. It is a very easy place to visit, part of the reason I posted was to give others an idea of what to expect and how to plan their own trip. If you do go, see if they will take you all of the way through Canyon del Muerto up the Pine Tree Trail, and let me know what I missed! That is my only regret from this trip.

LOL...I remember that picture :)

I'm not sure Alex if I am going to hit Tuweap this fall or wait until next spring. Kinda depends a bit on Tricia's schedule and if she is a little tight on her market, then I might just run the Mojave Rd first as its closer for us and then hit Tuweap next year. If you like, I'll keep you posted on the Tuweap trip....that *was* a great trip we had out there the last time for sure.

This fall is out of the question except maybe over Thanksgiving weekend. I seem to remember it already being hot there when we went that April, maybe November would be an ideal time to do it. Lemme know if you make any plans, especially if the trip involves trailside tent camping out of the jeeps. The only thing I didn't care for on that trip was driving back to the same base camp every night. It would be good to see you again Robert!
