Another thing how do you derate from 6t to4.5t. My truck is 3.8t with nothing on the back doesn't leave much for a camper to do it legally .

Stopped in Hervey Bay today. The seat has been bugging me. Just lately (67000km) the drivers seat seems to be wearing thin and I'm still looking for a smoother ride. Stopped at the local foam and rubber shop. Bought 2" latex for the base and 2" foam for back rest. Squeezed it between the seat and seat covers. Wow. What a difference. See how long it lasts! It's almost too comfy.

To be considered a motor home...

Can you rego a alloy tray with a slide on as a motor home ? Is $900 for a motor home at 6t or 4.5t.
No..... Pretty sure you need a crawl through.
In the ACT, where everything is different and more expensive, if you have a slide on you will have to pay commercial rates on the truck rego; the rationale being that you can take the camper off and use the truck for other purposes.
If the camper body is permanently mounted then it can be registered as a motorhome. To be classified as a motorhome the camper must contain the following, at a minimum:
  • seats and table;
  • sleeping accommodation, which may be made by converting the seats;
  • cooking facilities; and
  • storage facilities.
This equipment shall be rigidly fixed; however, the table may be designed to be easily removable.
I am pretty sure that a pass-thru is not mandatory.

if you can join the CMCA with it its a motor home
they're a pretty tough bunch when it comes to defining vehicles
tougher than any government agency
if it slides on and off its a camper
its easier to stick with the 4.5T rego and don't pay the big bucks, after all your4 not getting any extra value for your dollar

Well and truly out of the big smoke (if that's what you call Brisbane). Had a detour to 1770 last night. Met a guy with a wedgetail slide on. He has had it for 3 years and is very happy. He gave me a tour of his set up. They seem to have thought of everything.

I got to find out that my camper is still not water tight. It's great if you're a fish.

Kept on trekking as far as Mackay today. Road tripping with a 4 year old is different to road tripping with an adult. She did so well, so patient 9 hours in the truck. The road works along the Bruce highway are huge and expect long delays.

It's been ten years since I was travelling on the road and there seem to be a lot more caravans and camper trailers about.

The foam made a huge difference on the seat today. Still a bit wet around the place. Hope it's not too wet when we get to the creb track.

Truck is running pretty smooth ATM. The only downside of having something different on the back of a truck and not having a jayco on the back of a land cruiser is that you gather an audience pretty quick no matter where you set up. Good way of meeting others I suppose, but thinking of calling the camper "don't ask". What do you think?

Maybe you can print out a flier... :)

I'm guessing that this experience will give you a bit of an insight into what John will be going through next week at the Brisbane show.
Most people ask the same questions and there is a point in time where you just don't have the same enthusiasm giving the answers to those questions.
You could always change to a Jayco, then no one would talk to you...

the jayco warranty manager will become your best friend
like a couple we met on the road said
"Jayco is great , every time we have to take it in for warranty they put us up in a hotel"
mind you they live in Qld and have to take it to Vic for warranty

How are you entertaining the 4 yo? Best of luck.

She loves the truck and is a great kid. Only did 2hrs on the road today to make up yesterday's big drive. Sometimes you have to sacrifice where you would rather camp. For example today is in town at airlie beach so she can have a swim. Chocolate also seems to help.
