See, I never would have known that. How would I? I've never been in the military. There's a limit to how much a person can learn in a lifetime. The used firearm thing is obvious. I thought ammo cases would only be used for bullets, so would expect brass, gunpowder, and maybe lead residue?

Do you know exactly what happens to fuel injectors when your battery voltage drops? Probably should, but probably don't. Same deal.

Love the Super Parent perspective. You keep your toddler on a leash? Or just locked up in your living room? I refuse to believe that you raised perfect children and that they were never in any risk otherwise. How will your children ever learn risk management for themselves if you keep them in a bubble?

I agree about the parenting thing.....While my children are very well behaved they are after all, still little boys.
I have to remind the wife of this when they take forever eating something they don't like, or talk to each other in their bedroom when they are supposed to be going to sleep. They do know better than to climb on a display at a store though.

my kid will learn from falling on his bike playing with stuff etc..

yes some are over protective and some are just plain stupid and ignorant most are in between

the lego store ! hands on everything for them
going to the apple store they can touch if they ask me first

another good example costco had pianos the other day and a large sign that said please ask first before playing
we watched a kid walk up and start smashing the keys and the parent did nothing so the sales person said please dont hit it so hard just do it nicely and the parent told the sales guy he can do that if he wants !!!!!!!

Ok Honu, you walk into an army surplus store, to look at backpacks. On your way past the stack of ammo cans, your kid touches one, and the result is the same. Who's fault is it now?

At some point, vendors have to take responsibility for what they have in their stores.

Last week, another recall was announced in Canada. A "charm necklace" for sale in discount stores, you know the type, little girls like to wear them. Package said "Lead Free". Turns out, the necklace was actually made from 84% lead! The stores will of course pass the buck on to the manufacturer, Zhangzhou People's Lead Necklace Factory.

im with you rob..x 100 this could happen to anybody . even the best parents cant stop the kids from touching everything ,, and if i see something that intrests me .. guess what .. i will pick it up to look at it .. i will definatley be more careful now.. man there are warnings on everything these days.. buy a cup a coffee .. the cup says caution contents may be hot . duh. or food that may have come into contact with nuts...

but walk into a surplus store and pick up somthing that might poison or kill you thats ok.. i see no no problem there..

well if I pick up a toy and it says "Made in China" I suspect its going to be lead heavy !
I dont trust chinese toys ? pretty common knowledge they have lead issues



if my kid touches a box ? well I walked into the store ! so its my fault and it would be a accident I think if I walked into a surplus store I would make sure I tell my kid dont touch anything ! unless you ask me first
since my kids are taught well they would not have !
if my kid is two and touchy I would have carried him or had him in a buggy ?
even then if he did do that and it happened its my fault !!!! I BROUGHT HIM INTO A STORE THAT SELLS USED MILITARY STUFF
if you dont understand USED military stuff could be dirty then sadly not sure what to say ?

I dont bring my 2 year old into a gun store ? I go when I can without him (hes actually 17 months) problem solved

I'll be the jerk, for I don't care. But this, here, is where I feel no sympathy for the dad:

My little guy being 2.5 and wound for sound thought it would be cool to play with al the boxes and climb on them.

So he let's his little kid climb on things that aren't his (kid's or dad's) that are for sale to other people? Awesome. He probably sat there and thought, "aw, look at Lil' Bobby being cute!" Guess what? It's NOT cute. Keep a better eye on your kid. I wonder how the guy would feel if I took my 2 year old nephew into his house and let him just play and climb all over his stuff.

It would have been one thing if the kid accidentally brushed against it and the stuff happened to him or if dad didn't see Lil' Bobby doing what he was doing, but that's not the case. Dad stood there and watched his kid being mischievous. And I won't blame the kid, for kids will be kids. I'm blaming the dad for not being a better parent.

Parents like that piss me off for they think everything and everyone should cater to them or tolerate them because they have a kid. Guess what? We don't. It wasn't my choice that you had an off spring.

And yes, the store should have known better but at the same time they sell military surplus. USED things. USED MILITARY things. We all know the types of thing the military has access to and uses so let's not pretend it's a surprise. The dad should have known that not everything in the store is, was, will be clean. Hell I know that and I'm a 28yo non-mil person.

I feel for the kid, I really do...but...well...the dad is an idiot. I wonder if he knows what personal accountability is -- probably not.

Yep the shop made a mistake, but who hell who would have thought of CS gas residue........

If you think of that, basicly every item in an army surplus store could have it
plus a whole load of other harmfull chemicals.

The kid got uncomfortable and surely scared, it was just a unlucky scenario.

Hopefully the shop hosed the boxes down and will do so in the future.

again i will say .. i did not post this cuz i wanted to slam the guys parenting skills or anybody else's .. if a guy like me did not know about this kind of contamination , i guess that would be my fault , now my kids were always well behaved.. if i told them not to touch , they would not, and if i knew there was a danger i would definatley handle the situation differently,, what parent would knowingly put their children at risk ? at princess auto they always have a skid of ammo boxes .. i was there with my oldest daughter , she is 20 .. when she saw the boxes she picked one up and said '' hey dad these would be cool on your trailer'' Princess auto is not an army surplus store..( i believe its like the canadian version of harbour freight) i wouldnt think they would be decontaminating anything, ok i can tell my daughter not to touch, but what about the hundreds of people that shop there every single day.. who have less of a clue than people like me..

And good luck finding toys not made in China. Personally, I don't have a problem buying toys made in China if they are from a reputable manufacturer. It's the dollar store stuff that I don't trust.

as far as come back later my other child is 6 ?

again its about taking responsibility and common sense and not blaming others plain and simple

you and I have totally different parenting ideas ? that's fine its a free country ? for a while longer at least
