I saw one of these here in SoCal yesterday...really a sweet little bicycle/moped...gets 120 mpg and weighs 95lbs. $1499.
http://www.whizzermotorbike.com/ Not exactly an expedition bicycle...lol...but would be fun to have along in some situations.

Take away the modern reflectors, lights and mirrors, and it's like going back one hundred years in time. I love it! I want one.

What's old is new again. My dad had one as a kid. I think he wants another.....

As a novelty item, I could see buying one. However, I don't think it makes sense spending $1500 on this.

1) You can buy a scooter that goes 40MPH and still gets 100MPG. (vs. Whizzer's top speed of 25MPH. The Ambassador's rated at 40MPH, but also decreases the MPG to 90).

2) Questionable workmanship? How reliable are these things, and how much do you trust the components?

3) Peddling a bike is MUCH more fun. :jump: And gives you a healthier heart. And creates less pollution.

Like I said, it's cool for the retro factor, but definitely not something I would buy. Cool bike, though.

Yes, it also leaves you hot and sweaty when you arrive to work after that 15 mile ride. Not the best way for many people to show up to work.

There is a increasing demand for "battery assist" bicycles here in Tucson (or so the local newspaper claims). People are using the battery assist to help get them up the steeper hills (and using human power for everything else...) so they aren't all sweaty when they get to their destination.

So, the question is, if arriving to work all sweaty and stinky is not a good option for someone, is the battery assisted bike thing a good alternative to driving that full size SUV? Yea, I think so too. Maybe not as good in many ways (as you mention), but far superior to not riding at all.

:)

I'd think being in Tucson, you're sweating no matter what. :xxrotflma Seriously, even here in Salt Lake, when I rode my motorcycle, I'd sweat quite a bit, especially when stopped at lights. Granted, you will sweat more when you are peddling, but the bottom line is that you will be sweaty/stinky either way. Have a change of clothes at work and take a shower, if you can.

I ride the moto to work nearly every day. I'm neither sweaty nor stinky when I arrive. Likewise, I ride the moto home nearly every day....at 5pm when it is often still north of 100*, and arrive neither sweaty nor stinky. But really, my point is simply that for many people, riding a bike to work is not a good option. Anything that people do that reduces traffic, reduces fuel consumption, increases their level of health and well being, etc. all at the same time....is a good thing. Sure some are better than others, but isn't *any* improvement better than *no* improvement?

Ok, dude, obviously, I wasn't saying everyone should ditch their ICE rigs and buy a bike. To SOME, it works, but others, it doesn't. I have a 100+ mile commute everyday and need to be in a business casual outfit, so it will be very difficult for me to ride a bike, so I don't. I really said that comment in jest. Please do not make me call out Capt. Obvious next time. :xxrotflma

That said, I don't see how you can't sweat with it being at 100 degrees on a motorcycle. You must not gear up? I always had on a helmet, gloves, jacket, boots and pants.

Don't worry...I caught it. I'm well aware that most rational people realize that bicycle commuting is not a good option for everyone (and I'm guessing you fit into the "rational people" catagory).

I was just trying to spur some conversation about some alternatives that people are using. Not everything must be taken to an extreme to be effective...

As for riding gear...I am typically ATGATT, but I will admit some days I forgo the over-pants and hope that my jeans will survive the trip to work. I like it hot when I am riding on the street. On the freeway, once it drops into the 70's, I start thinking about putting the liners in....85 - 90* is just perfect....100* is getting warm, but not bad. 110* is getting to be a bit much...and just about sucks if you are in traffic.
