Clutch’s deep thoughts thread...

Love my Beta 300, but kinda yearn for something a little better for cruising back dirt roads and the occasional slab. Some of my friends in AZ recently did the Continental Divide trail over the summer...looks like a hoot.

I do have a 4 gallon tank for the Beta and a Giant Loop bag so a similar dirt bag setup to that 450 KTM I showed, just without all that fairing non-sense that is begging to smashed off. So I can do some extended range trips with what I have now, but even though it is oil injected...still have to carry oil...which just takes up space and weight. And screwed if you run out.

take a closer look at the picture you posted... seems to be missing a chain. :p :p

Oh, I thought you were talking about the Husky 701 with its' low ground clearance ...had me thinking you couldn't take too many gnarly places.

Yeah...that went over my head. :p Think because I didn't "Click to expand..." and can only see the top of the Husky on my end when you quoted me.

I don't think I could do a sleeping platform in a bed, either. With most set ups, you can't even sit up!

Tent camping has drawbacks, of course. Dave mentioned level ground, which could be an issue. High waters, another. But I do like being able to carry the tent amongst the trees and camp in a more secluded spot. Spots where a vehicle or trailer couldn't fit. And I camp in places where water really hasn't ever been a problem. Maybe if I ever head up to PNW. And rearranging? I think a tent would be the least intrusive when having to rearrange your cargo. Just take the tent out and leave everything where they are!

My wife wants an RTT. Because of bears. I say, you know, bears can climb trees pretty fast. Not sure a ladder would stop it.

I do take one of those parachute material style hammocks with me, that coupled with a tarp like Dave has works, my back seems to do ok in that...have done that a couple times. I usually set it for afternoon napping anyways.

RTT and bears. I am in Grizzly country, they don't even need a ladder to munch on you. :D RTT is good for the ground creepy crawlies though.

Real solution:
We just need to all get together and compare set ups. Dave, you buy that Jumping Jack, and we'll meet somewhere in ID, UT or CO and test out all 3 the same outing. Take turns sleeping in each other's set ups (separately!!!) and vote the best at the end of the trip to settle this once and for all.
:p

There you go!

I always thought the perfect setup for me a lightweight truck camper for quickie weekend trips, plus a built out enclosed trailer for extended ones. Have half of that equation now, but if I get the size trailer I want...my truck won't pull it, so I have to get a different truck and camper, then it all snow balls. Don't want to spend the money just yet...

I can't do hammocks. Probably because I get motion sickness so easy. I wish I could, though, because the set up is so easy and so light. I would do it for bikepacking/hiking, but I stick to bivy and tarp. Fortunately, I haven't had any unwelcomed visitors, but I do make sure to zip up tight.

That set up would work for me, too, but I use my truck bed too much, so it'd be a pain to take off the shell every time.

You could forget getting a new truck (let's face it, we've all given up hope of that ever happening!) and just get one of these for the extended outings:

We all have different needs don’t we? What works for one, another will be miserable. ?

Shell stays on permanently on my truck, as I have a 5X8’ open trailer which works for great for hauling stuff. It is like having a full-size truck without having to own a full-size truck. Hell of a lot easier to load too.

Vans are practical, but I hate ‘em, especially E-Series...had to drive those on and off for work for 6 years. Had a Chevy and a Dodge in fleet too...they all suck. Why anyone throws money at those POS is beyond me.

Do however like the Transits and Sprinters, but 4WD is going to cost $40-50K at least...no thanks. 4WD truck with an enclosed trailer does the same thing but for less.

Have thought of getting a small 5X10' enclosed trailer, would do everything a van would do cargo-wise...dirt cheap too! Even have a riding buddy that has offered to sell me his. The Tacoma would pull it, plus could dive in there and use a cot if the weather was too horrible for the 'Nest. Only problems would be, can't stand up in it, have no place to put it (kinda got screwed with outdoor storage space when we bought this house)...would either have to sell my 5X8 open trailer or put it in storage. Neither option appeals to me. It is like you fix one problem, three more arise.

Yeah, buying a new truck doesn’t solve any problems...in fact it creates one. Puts a big hole in my bank account. Which is ¡no bueno!

Air quality is sucking big time here...last day of my long weekend I gave myself. But too ************ out there to go ride bicycles, coughing with just riding around with the windows down in the truck.

Can barely make out the mountains, if at all.

Finally able to get back at it again...so far have been out camping 28 days this year so far...not bad, but not great either. July and August were pretty much a bust.

Hit the same place two weekends in a row...more like Sunday-Tuesday...those days seem to work best for me...weekend crowd is mostly gone...and this time of year...most of the touristas are gone too. :D Pretty much have the whole place to yourself and a few lingerers.

Some pics from those trips.

A touch chilly at night...

Most of the trails I rode were in a burned out area....looks like a bomb went off, but eerily beautiful. Seem fitting with Halloween right around the corner. Great trails though.

Herd of elk would show up every evening in the meadow below camp. Counted 18 (not all in the picture) Shot through my binoculars with the phone, case you're wondering.

This seriously made me laugh out loud....

Glad you got new coil-overs. I hope you got them installed.

Thanks!

Took about an hour yesterday. Most of that was dragging out the tools.

Hope they’ll settle a bit...truck has a “West Coast” lean to it now. The SAW’s that were in there have 650lbs springs, set for 2.5” lift. These OME’s are in the 500 lbs range...can’t remember exactly don’t have the paperwork in front of me. Was afraid they wouldn’t be enough...might be too much.

Just got done trail surfing...having perfect weather.

Don't you worry, those OME's will settle. As far as your unicorn dirt bike goes, the new Honda 450L looks very promising besides the fact you can't tune it.....it will be my 60 yo bike. I am currently 50 years old. Loading up the YZ250X in the am and headed to the MX track, I need to get some air. Gonna be a blast!
