At the time I bought my Ultimate Extreme it was only $49 from Amazon and I see that they have gone up in price quite a bit. I agree that twice the price is a bit much between the two models but compared to the other expedition ice chests it is still a good buy.

See, that makes much more sense, and I would buy the better one if I found a price even close to the model below it.

it's a 60 watt panel, which puts out about close to 4 amps on full sun

Now, just in case ??? I've also got a 400 watt wind turbine, that will put out 7 amps (light breeze) all night long and close to 38 amps in good wind

I've also got an old Navy MINI SUB Nuclear Reactor, if I could just figure out how to carry it to the mountains--(just kidding)

I spent a month back country camping this summer and I never managed to go more than 4-5 days without seeing a minimart with ice, so an Engel seems overkill for me. The soggy food thing is a drag, though. The Yeti's have a tray towards the top, which would help with this problem. Do any of the other coolers have this option? Anybody fabbed their own?

Right now I use a coleman ss steel cooler, and use the re-usable Blue Ice packs when I go for the weekend, and it works great. Pre-chill the cooler before loading with ice, and you don't have everything wet and standing in water. Freezing water in bottles and then drinking the water is not good. When the water has thawed the plastic releases something into the water making it a little cloudy, or you can see particles floating in the liquid. . I was using Evian bottles.

I use a SS Coleman, it is getting old these days and while the hinges are a little loose it works just like new.
I have only had it out performed by the extreme coolers with a really thick lid, after 4 days plus. The difference being my ice was almost gone (stuff still cold) and them having more....

I will get an ARB someday but for now like somebody said earlier, I walk past an Ice machine everytime I get gas. I tend to surface in public every 3 or 4 days it seems anyway.

I had the floating white stuff in my well water if frozen, are you sure it's the bottle?

I just picked up an Engel cooler. They are very close to the yeti coolers ( the ceo of engel usa told me that they actually treid to sue Yeti over the design of thiers being so close to the Yeti). They had the same specs when I did a comparison on them. I researched yeti, galaxy/iceecool and Engel before I bought. They are all rotomolded thick plastic with 2+ inches of PU insulation. All have great lid seals and the lids are very robust. I thought the Galaxy had the best latch system. The yeti and Engel are more refined looking than the Galaxy, but I hate the fact that the Engel and the Yeti are white. I liked the Galaxy because of thier multicolored bodies. I may not get to do a weeklong test on the Engel until next summer, but so far so good.

Don't be cheap...for 4-5 days of cooling you need a fridge. Get an Engel, they are great!

I've been down this road before, and purchased a few things before I decided to pull the trigger on an Engel, could have bought 2 with the money I have spent getting there.

We have well water and get this too. I think it is just minerals that form together when you freeze the water. Supposedly chemicals will leach from the cheap bottles, but I don't think you are supposed to be able to see those.

I like the coleman steel belted coolers. One of mine is probably close to 30 years old. I also have a smaller one that's about 20 years old, and a SS one (which they came out with some years after going to the all plastic ones) that's about 6 years old.
