but how about some long term reports on these tire - PLEASE!!??!!
Since we are in winter how about some snow reports? Any issues in the rain? Off road updates? And since I'm being a PITA and asking how about making them detailed reports - not just "great in........"

What do you want? Something like: I've got 46,000 miles on my tires. They do OK in the rain if I stay easy on the V8 from a standstill. Freeway speeds and windy road traction is good, wet or dry.
I was in NorthWest PA over Christmas

and while the photo doesn't show it, the road was quickly covered with several inches of snow and I was 4WD. No issues around town, or backroads driven at a proper speed for conditions.
Last Monday I was in GWNF

the muddy two track through the mountains posed no problems for the tires.
I'm extremely happy with them.

That's pretty much what I wanted. Just some updates on the tires and how they perform long term in various conditions.
I only asked because we got fixated on what tires sizes may or may not be available. Every size that is wanted could be available but if the tires suck then it doesn't much matter the size(s).
Thanks for the update.

I didn't know this thread was still going. I just read the last couple of pages. I am excited to see they are planning a 255/85R16. That could very well be my next tire if they aren't too heavy. Hopefully they will be load range D. But it seems Cooper has made everything E. But hopefully they will ride nice anyway. I'm excited for February or should I say March. I expect by March Redline will have his new set of 255/85R16 mounted and can give us some feedback! I'm assuming of course he is as excited about this as everyone else. I always appreciate his feedback and trail reports. Speaking of which I better visit his blog. Its been awhile.

Hey guys, I just saw this at tread depot. http://www.treaddepot.com/tire/90000019869.html Apparently they already have the 255/85R16 ST MAXX in their system. They currently show that they are out of stock, but the fact that they have all the info, including specs and pricing, is a good sign that this tire is really going to come to market. I do wish it was a lighter load range D, but otherwise the specs look great. I think I found my next tire.

I'm excited about the 255/85R16 S/T MAXX too, my old Ford F350 would like a set, though the set I will get and test will be 255/80R17 for a different platform.

The 255 S/T MAXX will be load-range E, both heavy-duty and heavy, ride won't be as good/complaint as LR D, but LR E is the way it is now with most new LT tires. The 285 S/T MAXX treads I tried almost two years ago were certainly stiff and rugged.

My blog is defunct, I've not posted for a year, don't have time for that, too many other projects and jobs going (though I've hesitated from pulling it down). I won't be in a position to share much about the 255 S/T MAXX initially, I'll be doing a magazine article on them and need to save most for that outlet. Other than the intentional firmness of the design, I'm not expecting any negatives to the 255 S/T MAXX treads, and hoping to get back 1-2 MPG.

Yeah if I could get back 1-2mpg that would be great. Plus they should be a little quieter. But an even bigger benefit for me is they should fit my LJ better than my 285s. I have a little rubbing right now and the 255s should take care of that. I would actually be happy if they were slightly shorter than the 285s. They are really sounding like a great tire for me.

Agreed on the width, though I like my 255s a little taller than my 285 when possible, which is traditional for the 255/8x size.

Yeah, I relize most 255s are taller than the 285s. And to some extent I can feel your pain. They were always a nice option for something just a little taller than the 285. But I still think the height will be good. Since those height measuremenets are typcially taken at max psi, it will be interesting to see how the tires height actually measures up at 30+/- psi that I think most people will run them at. I don't expect them to be much different than my 285s at the 26psi I run my tires at. It seems to me that Cooper did a good job of making a tire the same size as the old 33x10.5. I thought that is what people wanted?

I think when we start to see the tires the height won't be such an issue. Its only a 1/4" difference of ground clearance at most. My guess is it will be less than that. I guess if that 1/4" is an issue people will stick to 285s or move up to a 295/75R16. Depending on your vehicle I think a 275/70R18 is a nice size tire. But for me the specs on the 255/85R16 look to be just perfect. Apart from wanting them in a load range C for my Jeep.

EDIT: Just for point of reference the TrXus 255/85R16 is also only 32.7". So the ST MAXX isn't the first 255 at about that height. But I do understand peoples dissapointments. I'm just saying don't rule out this tire over a 1/4" of clearance at the axle.

Yes, that tire is the lone, less popular and 'tall' 255/85 exception, has been for a long time. :)

Fargo I emailed them about the time I posted up here on finding out about the new 255 size. Treaddepot would not give me a solid response as if this is a new tire they are adding into inventory or not. 3 responses back I gave up as they almost seemed automated.

I have been really curious about these tires lately so I have put about 4 sets on Dodge pickups in the fleet at work ( Nice to be able to try things out with someone else's money and trucks sometimes). So far after a couple of months two of the drivers have asked to go back to the Duratracs we normally use and two guys are in love with these tires. They seem to be pretty comparable to the Duratracs in the mud and I haven't heard too much bad about them in the snow. One guy says they load up and he gets stuck but he said the same with with Duratracs last winter, I think he just has problems deciding where to put his truck in the snow.

At 46,000 miles, how much tread is left or how many more miles do you feel you will get out of them?

@Redline - I would be very curious of the 255/80R17 would fit in the stock location of a 4th Gen 4runner. Looking forward to your article.

Interesting results. Were all 4 on the Duratracs prior to the ST MAXX? Why did the 2 prefer the Duratracs? Why did the other 2 prefer the ST MAXX?
