Cowl snorkel or actual snorkel??

i know there were some issues with the spectre cone filter on tj's, some were getting smashed when closing the filter tube and not sealing completely

not 100%, but it looks like you have enough space under the hood of an xj to do a windstar cowl intake. i have $35 invested in mine and that included a new filter

Yours is almost like mine. Except an airbox from a 4.0 Explorer.

I built mine after finding a flooded stock airbox for the 3rd time.

Where in the world did you see that? I jumped on mine for 200, almost ten years ago. Now they're $4-500 everywhere, including my search of ebay...

I went on ebay, typed in "safari snorkel" and found some for $120 shipped. Even said 'Safari Snorkel' on the fender part of the tube. And yes it was used, sorry I didn't state that. Paying over $400 for some plastic tubing is just plain redonkulous...

I think it was alluded to earlier but with a cowl style, that sticks up, would it be possible to put an extension for those rare deep fordings? Assuming you sorted out the electric etc.

Here's an example of a cowl intake fitted with either an air cap or a snorkel, sorry it's not an XJ but the concept could be the same. In this case, the Wrangler's cowl panel has been swapped for a custom panel that includes a duct underneath and an integrated fitting for the cap/snorkel.

You can always build one with ~$25 at your local home depot...

Draws air from inside the cowl, but on the driver's side away from the vent intake. Two 90* elbows of sewer pipe, a small straight of pipe, an OEM flexy section from another XJ, the body side intake block plate from a <96 XJ, some epoxy, and a big holesaw. Seals off the entire OEM airbox too.

I'll guess that hole in the front of the box was closed up after this picture was taken? If not, it's just as susceptible to water as it was before...

I think I need a bigger truck!
I was planning a home brew cowl snorkel but wanted that location for a deep cycle house battery. I still have to go find one that I can fit there and still close the hood...lol.
