D1 Half Rack Ideas

Pics also from EE, I think this would fix the visual problem, as well as provide a new option for customers.

First picture, use the same front three mounts as the SD, but end the basket where the roof hump is. On the third mount, you could run a hoop piece across the top. Doing this will balance the rack visually and make it more secure without much more material.

Second picture, shows how you mount a roof top tent using that open hoop on the rack. Offer an optional hoop for the rear. You could mount the tent to the hoop on the rack since it is open, the basket ended ahead of it. Wouldn't require a lot of material, maybe wider mounting feet on the optional rear hoop to keep it stable.

hope that explanation made sense

I think the second one could look decent... I guess both could if done properly.

Figure out what you plan to carry up there first. That will make the decision regarding dimensions a bit more valid.

Keep in mind-more relevant to your use than in commercial application-that swapping out racks is a PITA. Think about wiring to the lights, antenna, etc. Would your half-rack have lights? Would you swap those over, too?

If garage height is an issue, then you're limited to ending the rack before the "hump" in the roofline, to keep the total height low enough.

Good luck-fun project.

all he needs is quick disconnected for the wiring and the top of the a-pillar where they run up from the battery.

it really won't be a pain at all with another person to help him out and only doing it once every few months. he's not changing out racks every day here.

yup, already have the lights setup for that.

The JD2 model 3 bender I ordered won't be here for a few weeks because of the holidays, so I've got plenty of time to think of different version.

I may grab some roof rails off a junk disco so I can use them to build racks for folks with rails. My truck doesn't have them....

Apparently there are a few to choose from in the Carson City Pick-n-Pull and from what I hear, they are pretty much untouched and not wrecked.

fair point. I have the million pound CT rack-the others are much lighter....takes four guys at least 5'11'' tall to remove my rack...

Option 3 would spread out your weight onto the best parts of the roofline, right above the door pillars.

So as of this week i'm FINALLY ready to start building my first rack. I've decided that I'm going to go with #3. It's a rough sketch, but that's the basic design i'll attempt at. The extra little platform right above the "hump" will be nice for my fly fishing ladder, so that was a bonus too.

I made some simple bends that turned out great, but as the more complex (different planes) ones came along I decided I should wait. So the angle finder and bend tech software I ordered arrived today.... I'm gonna play around with it some and see what I can come up with!

I didn't plan on working full time (new job) when I started all this so it's going slow... Hopefully I'll be able to make some progress this week.
