D1 Half Rack Ideas

no middle support at the curve? looks pretty good otherwise, although i probably would've chosen something different than mesh flooring.

I think the span in between the two supports is short enough that he won't need the apex supported as you have pointed out. The side support appears to be very close to the start of the radius and should offer good support for the intended loads.

I think you've done a killer job at any level, but especially for your first try. Now where is that waiver...

I have some 3/4" tubing I could probably stick there, but I don't think I need to. The rack isn't large enough to fit big heavy objects up there anyways. I'm around 200lbs and I can stand in the center of the rack and it feels firm.

I kept posting the pics on the BBCNN forum so you guys could see my designs, and because a couple of the guys were interested in me helping them build racks.

In regards to the flooring, I though that overtime the mesh would sag and twist do to use. I know the Trek at Land Rover Northpoint has that flooring. It's bent up and is sagging a good 1" to 1-1/2" lower between the supports. Is your flooring a heavier grade metal or do you plan on just being careful with it?

It must be a heavier guage then. I've had this mesh on my full length rack for years (one of the first things I actually did to the truck when I got it) and it still loooks great. The gear I put up there isn't extremly heavy, or focused on a small spot. I'm 200lbs and I walk up there with no problems.

At any rate matt, this build is a huge inspiration. I'm going to start a similar project in a few weeks. Again, excellent work!

Got ya. Yeah I have to agree that it looks way better than the Farmtek or plywood or anything else. Great great job!!

Matt, I personally like either the backpack or full SD but great execution on the rack. Really well done ;)

What do you think the metal mesh portion weighs? Then the weight of the entire rack?

I'm about to modify my SD rack and am on the fence about the metal mesh. I like it but I suspect it's heavy.

Thanks guys!

the mesh does add some weight. How much, not sure... I like it on my other rack, so that's why I went with it. If you're looking to save as much weight as possible, then maybe go a different route. I personally think the other flooring options look like crap.

I think more people will like it once I get it powder coated.

Agreed. Currently I have the Chicken Coop flooring on my SD, don't mind the looks so much but would like something thinner. Been thinking hard about the metal grate stuff. Recently seen another SD rack with it welded to it, starting to grow on me.

I guess I'd better look up the weight of it.

I've never really looked at it too close, but it just didn't look that good to me. I guess most use zip ties to secure it?

yeah 175lb ones. mine were hidden on the outside, so you couldn't see them unless you were looking for them...

i kept the front two sheets when i sold the rack.
