Japes,

I was in a somewhat similar situation as you find yourself. My job has tanked to the point where my working hours have been slashed. So buying a new vehicle to replace my aging Volvo wagon, just wasn't going to happen.
The Volvo was a 760 2.3L turbo model. The very best highway milage I got was 22.3mpg. The average was 20mpg. It did not have much ground clearance when loaded down and that was with Nivomat self leveling, rear shocks. Driving on dirt roads was ok, if they were flat. Any kind of uneven terrain and you could easily get hung up. I would not recommend the Volvos as they are $$$ to repair and the early ones have electrical issues. It is said that they have biodegradable wiring.

I researched just about anything that rolled and could be used for camping or expedition type traveling. Use the EPA's website to see what kind of mpg you can expect to get from a "stock" vehicle. Just remember that adding roof racks, adding a lift kit or larger tires, can reduce your mpg.

I settled on an older Ford Ranger 4X4 extra cab, with the 4.0L engine and manual 5 speed. I like the fact that it has a full frame underneath it, vs a unibody design. The highway mpg is rated at 20mpg, about the same as the Volvo wagon. The Ranger with the 4 cylinder 2.3 is rated at 22mpg, so I would rather have the V6. It came with a fiberglass shell, which I plan on adding some insulation and making some lightweight storage compartments. For camping I plan on using a tent attachment to the camper shell.

My second choice would have been a Suzuki Sidekick with the small 4 cylinder.

You could always try to straight trade with someone on Craigslist. The fact that it's 4WD probably means you could get swapped into something (possibly better) easily...especially in GA. But it's probably gonna be a civic-type car or 2wd truck.

Here's a D50 (no affiliation) that's a few hours from you. Your situation had me curious, and made me do a CL check to see whats available for the price.

http://charleston.craigslist.org/cto/2890696381.html I have seen a few of the older Ford Rangers as mentioned above in the $1800 range.

In all likelyhood, what you have is probably cheaper over the course of a few years than getting something else unless you either do a straight trade or buy cheaper (used always needs a little maintenance). I was in a "different but similar" situation a few years ago. Trying to switch ended up costing way more than just toughing it out, budgeting, and keeping what I had. I am also of the belief that you will have to compromise...I say forget 4WD...if your girlfriend is just getting into camping anyway, you won't be doing any extended backcountry travel for a while as they typically require longer trips. Also, don't underestimate the durability of some cars on easy stuff like forest roads. Taking it slow shouldn't really hurt the car. Even if you beat it up for a few years, you'll likely get something better once you graduate anyway.

Good luck!

I have tried straight trades, no one seems to be interested, I found a 91 B2600 EXT Cab for 2k that I am going to look at if the trooper sells.

Lady also showed interested in SCCA after showing her solo runs, between her feeding my car habit and her drum buying habits we are going to be broke all the time.

Personally I find it crazy that no one is interested in a awesome offroad / camping vehicle for under 2500$.

Bummer on the difficulty of selling the trooper. Guess I won't suggest anything vehicle wise until it sells. As some one who lives in Arizona where speed limits are frequently 75 I can attest to how hard it's not to cruise at 80. It takes some serious discipline but dropping to 65 or 70 and staying in the right lane seems like your best bet for fuel consumption and the added bonus of safety. I know 65 is seriously not glamorous but you seem to have a good attitude and understanding that that's life some times. My 04 rav4 with 3 bikes and a luggage rack loaded to the gills burns some serious gas at 4500 rpm in third gear going 75 but mellowed at a lot and got decent mileage at 65.

EDIT : I forgot to mention the very best thing about your trooper, and any vehicle really: ITS PAID FOR!, and for most of us that is priceless.

Yeah, I am not jumping into payments again. I have tried to drop my speed but it doesn't seem to do much for mileage. Last trip was 12 mpg. I have had numerous offers but none were even close to the value of the trooper, let alone what I am asking. I found a few options on CL if I can manage to sell the troop soon!

Here are a few of the things I am looking at!

Why not a 4 door 4x4 Chevy Tracker?? It has the engine all the Sammy guys upgrade to and Toyota SAS are very common on them and look pretty cool in my opinion.

Click link for all the extreme possibilites LOL...seriously it extreme but ************

See awesomeness

After seeing the U.S. Top Gear with the Sami she is adamant about me not owning anything that looks even close to one. Yes I tried to explain and it didnt work.

Buying someone elses 25yo problem will just net you more problems than you have now. Some people on here have been real nice about telling you the real way it will end up.

Fix the trooper and drive it.
For about $1200 you can have an Old Man Emu suspension and firestone destination AT's....maybe pop some new bushings in on the swaybar...have it aligned and that trooper would be awesome.

For a few hundred less, you could put monomax shocks, firestone destination at tires on it and it would be awesome still yet.

Remember the adage "pound wise and penny foolish" and you'll get some more life with your Trooper. There is no magic vehicle in the US market that appears to suit all your requirements. How about a Cummins 4BT or Isuzu TD swap in the Trooper? How about a Dodge W250/W350 with a turbo diesel?

Just like my little collection of Monteros, you're driving a barn door through the sky, and you'll either pay with time by slowing down or more $$ for gas to drive fast.

Consider changing tires to a smaller size?

The best advise given this far in my opinion is buying a 30mpg 2wd truck. If I were in college again, that's what I'd get. Cheap, reliable and good mpg. Since you're broke, you won't be wheeling, so 4x4 won't matter. A 2wd truck will get you to where you need to go. Just keep a set of chains in the back and you'll make it through 99% of snow storms.

Another option is to get a cheap econo sedan. Even better mpg and cheaper maintenance. You can also get cables for snow performance. Will get you to most trailhead parking lots, then you can take up hiking since it's free.

look for a Tracker , don't mention it's a Suzuki. Kind of funny that she uses Top Gear for advice - I love those guys but they are nuts. Your Trooper wouldn't last as long as the Samurai did in their hands, either. But don't tell her that, as well :D . I bought a 4 door Sidekick for 750, it got 27 mpg on a my 100 mile rt daily commute for two years. Love the 16v motor. Hooked up a hitch and hauled a small trailer when I needed it to be a truck. I sold it to my daughter, and it kept her happy and safe until she was t-boned by a drunk - no injuries for her. And she now has a 97 (the old one was a 93) with a 1.8 16v. NIIIiice little car. She loves it.

You should just sell the 99 Trooper (I know how those 3.5s guzzle gas with the TOD) and buy a 1st gen 2.6L 4 Cylinder Trooper. :)

Whats a 2.6 Going to net me? I have a guy offering one for a trade and I was going to ask over at the Zoo but never got around to it.

Well, I would say it all depends on how much stuff you do to it. I would bet you get 10 MPG more than your 3.5 though, especially if it is a well taken care of 2.6. I have a 89 RS and it gets WAY better mileage than my VX with the 3.5. We'll see how much that changes after I lift and add a winch bumper, etc.

Nothing immediate, it has some decent tires on it, but I wouldnt lift / 33 it any time soon, whats a good price on a nice first gen?
