That 4cyl is almost dangerous slow from what I'm told. Putting around town, you may be fine. Getting onto a major highway or running an interstate, forget it. I don't think I would try to do anything off road in it, especially tow a boat or load it down to go out for the weekend.

Again, this is based on what I'm told, not my personal real world experience.

Your current trooper Is perfect for what you are asking with tires and shocks. I have done the same thing you are after, in a trooper and it exceeded my expectations. -so much that I'm buying another trooper tomorrow after a year and a half of Jeep ownership.

My guess (and I could be wrong) ...you will be trading your problems for some else's.

I would love love love to keep the trooper, but I have no job and with the money in the bank it will hold me another month. So I am deff getting rid of it, prolly looking at a Honda Eco Car or if I can get a the first gen + Cash I would have to do that. I have to sell the trooper though.

Actually, 4cylinder 1st gen Troopers are not at all as pokey as most people would think. True, once you are weighed down with cargo and mods, you will feel it.

My 89 RS hauls on the highway. However, the RS also has 4.77 gears which helps. With the right setup, I think the 4 banger Troopers can be great, and good on gas.

The price on a GOOD used 1st gen would likely be around $2000. Of course, you can find plenty for more and plenty for less, but no matter what, you have to remember you are looking at a 20+ year old vehicle. They will need work. But any old vehicle will need work.

I dunno, I'm partial to the 1st gen Troopers for several reasons. They have the look, they are also EXTREMELY simple, they are utterly utilitarian, parts are cheap, and they can hold A LOT. And they are pretty much excellent offroad, especially with a few key upgrades.

Anyway, there's always the Samis. I love them too. :)

Wow, that is a really good price for a late model Trooper. I'm surprised. But then again, people in general have pretty much forgotten Isuzu....

Yeah, its got decent 285s, no tranny issues, its not a perfect rig but hell i drive it every day and it has never let me down. If I was looking for a SUV for offroad I would buy this in a heartbeat.

Yup, CL, Here, My local 4x4 club, and the Zoo. Doesn't seem like anyone is looking for one. I see exploders, old beater trucks, and general crap sell for more then my Trooper.

Unfortunately, you have a few things stacked against you. The economy sucks, gas prices are high (you're not the only one trying to get back some MPG), Isuzus are a forgotten breed, and those in the know, know about the 3.5 and its issues. Plus, 1st gens look cooler! ;) But still, that's a nice price for a nice rig.

i have a bad feeling that that 4cyl mustang will be harder to sell here than your isuzu bud. no one really wants a 4cyl mustang.

We have found a replacement! My girlfriend and I have decided on a 86 Volvo 240 Wagon! Clean leather interior, clean exterior, and chrome roof racks. Hopefully the Trooper will be disappearing Tuesday to a member of Planet Isuzoo and I will be picking up my new vehicle that night! MY girlfriend is actually more excited about the wagon then I. She plays in a rock band so we have tons of gear to move around plus she wants to camp more often so the wagon is the perfect option. Pictures will be up once it is in my drive way! :))))) Most things we will do to it are to keep it running well. Any volvo experts know a good spring / strut combo to get a few bits of lift? Tires will remain stock for now same with engine.
