Great to hear you still have a 110. In my earlier days as a Fireman I responded to a Volkswagen that had caught fire. Not really a strange thing to have happened. Being the good Fireman, I DC'd the battery and put the fire out. Cleaned up the mess and sent the VW on its way on the back of a tow truck. What I failed to do was either clip the terminal off or wrap the positive connection in electrical tape so I wouldn't have to be called back to put out the flaming VW that was then attached to the back of the the Tow truck.
Nice to hear you had enough extinguishers to do the job.

I thought this was going to be another oil lines thread! Sorry to see that, but it looks like it's going to be alright. As many of my Rover projects end up; now the minor project has transformed into a huge PITA!
Look at the bright side:
You needed to upgrade that old outdated HellRoaring unit anyway, and now you have reason to order the updated heated seat foam!

Excuse my ignorance, but is that the stock location for the battery? Have you had any issues with water crossings or other humidity causing issues with the battery there? It looks like a fairly closed-off location. The reason I ask is that my battery needs to find a new home, and I was considering that spot.

Yes, that is the stock location for a Defender battery. Well, really under the passenger seat, but here in NA it sits under the driver. The box is pretty well ventilated. It is Defender bodywork after all. I've had no problems with condensation or wading.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Your title scared me a bit...glad to know that you can recover from the incident. :smilies27

I have the Hellroaring unit that you just ordered. I have it installed with 2 of their heavy duty fuses. I'm hoping that if something like that ever happens to me that the fuse will blow and protect the car and possibly the system too.

Did you have one of their 150 amp fuses in place? If so, is it still intact even after 2 minutes of shorting out so much that it caused the fire?

I'm hoping you and the 110 have a quick recovery!

Yes, I did have a fuse in place, but it did not blow. There is a big warning on the HR instructions to NEVER put the neg terminal wires in contact with pos connectors on the HR when the unit is on. Doing so will void your warrenty (as it catches on fire and burns).

In no way was it a problem with the HR unit. It was entirely MY FAULT. Just keep your cables hooked up to the correct places when the car is on, and you should be fine!

CO2 Extinguishers?

Graham,
It may be worth keeping a CO2 extinguisher around the shop since your dealing with high "high powered" electronics. A CO2 extinguisher would have put out the fire and left no residue...

Just my two cents. I'm glad to hear everything is working out alright.
