The bezel change happened in the '79 model year. Cdn spec rigs still had the B diesel until 1981. So if it has a square bezel it could be anything.

I sit corrected. Thanks Bruce!

Typical Toyota

As always with toyota, they mess around with model year changes based on market and part availability.

BJ40 denotes a B engine
BJ41 Denotes 2B (JDM only, like the BJ44 with 2B)
BJ42 denotes 3B but not necessarily a 5 speed. for sure after 10/82 all 3b rigs had the 5.

Odd notes:
The B ran until 8/80 (model year 1981) but was used in some later until they were used up. toyota will do this using up old parts until they run out and introduce the new stuff.

the 2b and 3b were introduced in 8/80 and were used in different parts of the world (2b was a JDM only engine - 3.2 vs the 3B's 3.4 litre, but with the same HP and tourque due to different compression (20:1 3B vs 21:1 2B)

The Aus/NZ destined trucks got the vents, not japan.

The Aus/NZ trucks didn't get front disks until 8/80.

Japan got the silver dash panel (1983 only here) in 8/80 in some rigs.

The 8/80 and later 40/42 had a bench seat in the back. Pre 8/80 had the jumps.

I am guessing that this is a 79-8/80 rig. Either way. Nice!

I would of "forgotten" about returning it! :hehe:

Well he came and got is back... What a truck... Interesting thing (I learned from Marc Ritchey and Straub) is you can pull the head off, polish the intake precups, and this drops your EGTs and you can really turbo them well... Marc's, which I drove on 38's, felt almost like a V8...

I was under the impression that the majority of the BJ's were NOT the 3b... Andre if I got you the Numbers off my buddy's BJ could you tell me what engine is actualy in teh truck??? I had thought we had narrowed it down to the 2b...

It's a great little motor, really torquey, but without the ability to "wind out" that I have with my 22RE gasser. He has been tossing around the idea of Turboing it, but he want's to really know wehat he's getting into, and he's more of a gear lover/admirer than an actual gear head ;)

It is a 3B, 1984 model last year of the 40 series. Really a work of sheer beauty, handles amazing (literally cruises safely as high as 90mph or higher). In this case I find the opposite, really winds out pretty well, much higher RPMs enginge than others I have experienced...

Correct hte 2Bs are really rare and are JBM only. The B engine is pretty common, outdated, a lot like the old H 6 cyl engines. Basically, they are a diesel but avoid... Early/underpowered/doggy/smokey and old school technology. So are the 3B and 2H but they are still worlds ahead...

I've seen this vehicle around my neighborhood a few times, and finally snapped some pics of it. I left a card on it with the ExPo site, so maybe they'll find their way here.

Looks nice. Did you document the rebuild anywhere, so we can check it out?

I really miss my HJ45. More than any vehicle I've had and sold.

Here is my little toy 1979 BJ40 with B engine / 4speed. It came from Costa Rica with drums on all 4 and no roll bar. It did have the vent windows on the doors.

Out of curiousity what would be a ballpark value for this truck? I want one.

Too many variables of condition and mileage, it all depends on the specific truck - but since they all have to be imported into the U.S., more than an FJ40 for sure. A really nice one would be a lot more. For reference, you can get a pretty nice FJ for $10-12,000 these days. There was a nice BJ Troopy for sale in CA last summer for $18,000 IIRC.
