...The window of opportunity to replace our VW TDI with a new one that doesn't require urea is going to pass very soon...

In 12 months, to be exact. The 2013 VW models will use the 2.0L turbo diesel without urea injection. In 2014, VW will switch to a new turbodiesel with the same displacement, but with urea injection to help clean up the exhaust. The new engine will produce 280 ft-lb of torque, up from 236 in the current engine.

Car and Driver recently tested a 2013 turbo diesel Beetle that had a 6-speed manual transmission. They recorded 45 mpg, almost double the mpg returned by the Beetle's base 2.5L five cylinder gas engine.

The LA Auto Show starts this weekend. Spies from Autoblog got onto the show floor and started snooping around. One item of interest: The Mazda display area included a placard that declared that the the 2.2L Skyactive-D four cylinder turbodiesel will arrive in USA in the Mazda6 sedan during calendar 2013 as a 2014 model. I'm guessing that torque will be around 280 ft lb, to stay competitive with VW's new four cylinder diesel (described above).

No word yet about placing the diesel engine in the CX-5. VW is planning to introduce a diesel Tiguan SUV in 2015, so maybe Mazda will wait until then.

In other diesel news, Audi has widened the use of diesel engines in their 2013 models. The A6, A7, and A8 sedans, and the Q5 SUV will get diesel power for the first time in 2013. The Q7 SUV will continue to offer a diesel in 2013. All will utilize the VW corporate V6 diesel that produces 407 ft lb. No 2013 EPA ratings are available for these models yet.

DEF will enable the manufacturers to back down the egr and regenerations which will result in increased fuel economy and greatly reduced fuel dilution.

That being said,I don't think I'll ever sell my '07 5.9.

Thanks Chip.

If the above holds true it almost certainly solidifies our choice, a 2013-2014 Jetta SportWagen TDI w/6-speed manual. No sedans for us, the only possible substitute for a JSW might be a SkyActive Mazda Diesel, but only in a wagon or SUV.

Update from Car and Driver: The Mazda6 with 2.2L turbodiesel will appear in the second half of calendar 2013 as a 2014 model. The diesel will be available with a 6 speed manual or 6 speed automatic transmission. The engine will not require additional exhaust treatment to meet USA emissions standards (i.e., no urea injection).

In today's report from the feds, diesel prices are somewhere around 17% higher than the cost of regular gas. To make sense economically, the new diesel will have to be 20% more fuel efficient than the 2.5L gas engine in the Mazda6. The EPA rates the 2013 Mazda6 with 2.5L gas engine and 6 speed auto trans at 21 city, 30 highway, 25 mpg combined. Will the diesel Mazda6 get 20% better mpg, say better than 30 mpg combined? Maybe it will. The 2013 diesel Passat, a similar size vehicle, is EPA-rated at 34 mpg combined.

Yes, no urea, one of the things that has me very excited about the new Mazda. However, if it's only in a sedan to begin with, that's a deal-breaker in our household. Fantastic to hear about a 6-speed manual transmission!

Since light-duty [car] diesels routinely exceed their EPA ratings, I have little doubt that the Mazda can/will be 20%+ more fuel efficient. I expect to get close to 40 mpg out of our JSW TDI.

Car and Driver reports that Mercedes has decided to use its 2.1L four cylinder turbo diesel in the E series sedan in 2013. The heavily revised diesel E-Class sedan will be introduced in Spring, 2013 as a 2014 model.

The E250 diesel will be offered only with all wheel drive. This is the same drivetrain Mercedes plans to use in the GLK250 and ML250 SUVs. The engine is rated to produce 369 ft lb of torque, somewhat less than the 400 ft lb output of the E350 diesel sold today. The E350 diesel will not be available in the new E-Class.

The 2012 six cylinder diesel E350 Blutec sedan is rated by the EPA to return 22 mpg city, 32 mpg highway. It will be interesting to see how much more mpg drivers can expect from the smaller E250. Both vehicles are attached to a 7speed automatic transmission.

I'd prefer urea injection over frequent regens and egr's turned way up. Dodge is going to it in 2013 in their 2500-3500 CTD's and has increased it's oil change intervals reportedly as low as 3-4K currently to 15K as well as a reported 10% increase in fuel economy.
Urea has helped boost fuel economy in the Fords and Duramaxes, albeit at the cost of yet another device.

A couple of cool quotes from Mike Manley:

If the emails and the letters I've gotten from Jeep customers are anything to go by, it (the Diesel GC) will be very, very good

Which is great, as it shows he's hearing that we want diesels.

Jeep also is focused on improving fuel economy for the Wrangler without sacrificing its rugged capability, the executive says. Adding that fuel economy is of the greatest concern. “By using technology intelligently, we can stay very true to Jeep brand"

Tantalizingly close to saying a diesel Wrangler is being considered.

More on the Diesel Grand Cherokee:
http://www.autoblog.com/2012/12/05/jeep-grand-cherokee-headed-for-detroit-reveal-on-diesel-power/

Time to quit your bellyaching and pony up your pennies, Jeep fans. Chrysler has announced the Jeep Grand Cherokee will bow with a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine in the first quarter of next year. The engine yields 237 horsepower and an impressive 406 pound-feet of torque, and all that twist shows up from 1,800 rpm on. If you're counting, that's 16 lb-ft more than the 5.7-liter V8. Expect to see it bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission. As you may recall, this isn't the first time we've heard this news.

c'mon Wrangler !

did the US never get the GC with the diesel, we had them in canada for a year or two. my uncle has one and tows a 24' travel trailer with it nice trucks and very fast ( smoked my 2007 5.9 cummins empty)

We got them...the Mercedes OM642 diesel is a more proven world engine than the VM Fiat engine and there were only a handful sold.

It will be the same story with this package as well.....this Grand Cherokee is less expo than the last Grand Cherokee

The Jeep dealers did not embrace the Mercedes engine and I cringe to think about what they will do with this VM engine....

Ford just announced that the new Transit full size van will offer a diesel engine option. The engine is a 3.2L inline 5 cylinder turbodiesel, and is expected to produce about 350 ft lb of torque. The engine will be paired with a six speed automatic transmission. No date for release of the diesel was announced. The Transit is supposed to be introduced this Spring as a 2014 model.

The Transit will be available with several gasoline engines, too, including the 3.5L EcoBoost V6. In the F150, the turbo V6 produces 420 ft lb of torque, and costs about $2300 more than the standard gas V6. It will be interesting to see how Ford prices the new diesel and Ecoboost engines in the Transit.

Ford uses a version of this engine in its new Ranger mid-size pickup, not sold in USA. The 3.2L diesel would be a nice fit in the F150 and Ford's large SUVs.
