Great article in the latest Overland Journal about the FJ60 project. The Diesel Swap sounds awesome!!! What are the costs associated with the kit that TLC plans on selling or has that been decided yet??? Looking forward to more info about this project!!!

i don't have the latest issue yet so I can't comment specifically on that swap but I swapped a 1HZ into my HJ60 back in 2004.

As you can probably guess there are A LOT of factors that affect the cost of the project. I've read about budget DIY builds for less than $5000 to custom fab-shop builds for over $20,000. Ultimately it all depends on what engine you choose, and who does the work. Swapping in a toyota diesel can be much more expensive than a 6.2, cummins or other domestic diesel swap. The market for toyota diesels has changed a lot since I did mine. Recently, I haven't seen later toyota diesel powertrain combos for selling for less than $7000, or more for the factory turbo-diesels and that's just for the parts alone. Cheaper options would be a 3B or 2H from a canadian HJ or BJ since they are more common and "near-by." Then it all come down to mileage and condition.

I hope this helps. Once I get my hands on the article, I'll may be able to answer more specifically.

The kit will consist of the major components needed for the swap. Bellhousing, motor mounts, etc...... We're using the International 2.8, which has to come in from South America, and isn't cheap. But it's a good, compact, simple diesel engine that works great in the Toyota's. It's the largest chunk of change in the whole project... When the kit is ready, Expo will be the first to know!

I've been not-so-patiently waiting for the completion of Roseann's 2.8 & HF55 swap.

While I'm sure it will be a key enhancement for her and her plans for her 60, I'm afraid the total cost will be 2 or 3 times what many people have paid for their LC's. TLC has a top notch reputation so I guess you get what you pay for.

The diesel swap will start soon, we just finished up with the drivetrain mods, rebuild. Went through both axles & the entire suspension.

Too bad it's not a IKZ or another Toyota Diesel, that'd make it alot more apealing IMO. Still, a diesel swap is a diesel swap so I'll be watching anxiously.

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
I personally think this swap is far superior than most of the Toy diesels including the 1HZ, for what its worth. It does not have to be "Toyota" IMO for it to be the best option, by any stretch at all :)

Parts are available here in the US, that motor has been around for a while, and is being used in many applications. Allot of the parts are interchangeable with other manufacturers. The reason the motors come from SA is that they aren't available in the US brand new.

That swap is gonna be awesome...as to costs...we'll have to wait for TLC to come out with the kit price, or cajole DesertRose a bit...

Either way...I'm bettin' it ain't cheap....TLC commands top prices for their top level work...and rightfully so! That's Cruiser "art" they make....

So true! TLC does amazing work. I'm guessing the price will look something like this $XX,XXX.XX

I'll pass the compliments on to the deserving parties! Don't worry guys, the kit won't be outrageous..... The diesel swap info is changing almost daily, so it may be a while before e-thing is dialed in.

Both Andre and I have been in contact with Roseann throughout the decision process, and although we are both Toyota guys, we also both fully support the engine choice.
It is one of the only viable modern engine choices that is still mechanically simple, size (both power and physical) is about perfect for the 60, it is surprisingly lightweight, relatively clean burning and is under current production and parts availability should not be bad at all, certainly not as difficult as the modern Toyota diesels, which are actually quite manageable as long as you plan ahead.
With TLC backing the project I am confident that we will all be jealous of the results. :chowtime:
