Disco 2 buyer info needed

So, I am getting ready to finally make the leap into the Overland world, been dabbling a bit in it but always been this import guy ... I keep looking and keep finding Disco 2's for around 3-5k with around 100k miles on them, why are they so cheap?

What are the things I need to look for and what should i be looking for in order to purchase a good platform. Goals are a few expo's I have heard about plus just doing my own thing here in Maine and creating my own event at some point.

Thanks guys and please no zingers!

Discoweb contains a wealth of information. Thick skin is required, though. Search and do a lot of reading before even thinking about your first post there. Every question that you could have regarding the care and feeding of a D1 or D2 has been covered there in detail and with nauseating frequency.

It is filled with jackholes, smart-alecks, geniuses, and charlatans. I have often been counted among three of those categories.

Again, it is not for the faint of heart.

I owned a 2003 LR Disco and I loved it but if you purchase one get ready for a high maintenance vehicle. It was a great second vehicle but make sure you do all of your research. Dweb.org is a wealth of knowledge and as other people have stated make sure you know what you are talking about before you post.

Disappointing. Been seriously considering a Rover but it looks like just asking for trouble.

It's not If you are handy with the wrench and maintain it well they are good trucks. I've had a Discovery 2 for over 9 years now and it has been great other than a faulty Driveshaft and basic stuff.

Some 04 D2's are now slipping liners (ask me how I know) even when they have been well maintained. If you get an '03, make sure it's not in the vin range for the exploding oil pumps. Yes, they come apart and take out the engine. It's caused by a dowel misalignment. LR even issued a bulletin with the affected vin range but no recall, even though the only fix is a new block.

Well all this makes me scared, yet excited :) It would be a 2nd ride and would generally use it on weekends! However wouldnt want to break down in the woods .. Seems like a major fail! Thanks too all of you!

Strangely enough, Land Rovers never seem to fail like that on trails - it's always in the mall parking lot. They just seem like they like to be driven. The only time a LR has ever failed me on a trip was my 110 when the aftermarket ignition amplifier installed by ECR failed.

If you are looking at Discos, I would either be buying Discovery 1 or a Discovery 2.5. The old Discos and Classics are beasts - just getting harder to find any for sale that aren't complete project vehicles.

Any older Land Rover would make a very fun second vehicle, especially if you enjoy a little grime under the fingernails.

x2 what pugs said. Never had a problem on the trail with my D2 and I used it hard. Any issues came during daily driving. If you can turn a wrench and are handy with searching forums to diagnose problems they're not bad at all. Parts aren't very expensive either if you know where to get them

Unless you really need the extra length or better seats you find in the rear of the DII, I see no reason at all to choose one over a DI. Even then a LWB Range Rover Classic would be better.

My 2c.

After owning both a D1 and D2.
D2s:
likes:
extra cargo room
cheaper engine management parts
abs that isnt psycho
Dislikes:
watts link
cassette bearings
so much body plastic that gets broken easy.
D1:
likes:
3 link rear
mechanical/simple everything.
fairly easy to service
5 speed optional!
Dislikes:
brakes are terrible
cargo room is kinda stumpy, even more so with a SE7.
seats are kind of awful. (rrc seats swap out and are quite nicer)
Most are worn to the point of being mostly junkers now

Everything else is details!
