what are the laws like in SA these days?
Not very good. You have to be in very deep trouble before it's justified to use it. I don't know what's a worse risk. Getting killed or being sent to an African jail

Not yet, but will soon. I'm currently shopping around and I recently took the CWP class. I've never had one drawn on me, but I've been in situations where if a few slight details had changed, it would have been really nice to know I had it on me. I also carry an emergency blanket, signal mirror and whistle in my pack. I've never used them, but the one time I do, it's all worth it.

I usually travel in remote areas and either by myself or with my family. In those situations I always have my .45 or .357 with me, loaded with Hydroshock for protection. When I travel with groups I either leave it at home or at least keep it locked away, out of sight.

Sometimes..............

Depends on if I'm getting one of my "Feelings" before I leave the house.

But............

Especially when I'm down near this crappy southern Fence!:gunt:

(the problem is....there are drug runners with firepower.....and the local BP has even warned me about it! so this is not to slam the other side of that fence. I like the other side of that fence! but you must admit!.....it's a crappy fence!)

In my humble opinion..........

While in the outback.......

The mere presence of a gun....in view.....should be enough to thwart a crime. Unless the freeks are really really stupid, or on drugs.....or have really bad eyesight!

Because I feel very strongly about this.....I would prefer open carry while in the outback over concealed.

If carried "Open" ...........it's not like you will have to "brandish a weapon" (to make them see it and try to stop the threat)....which they might try to hold against you if there is trouble, if it were concealed.

.....but what the heck do I know! I just know I'm a good shot......Thank God!

..............Practice!!!!!!!

I just question my ability to pull the trigger on a person who wasn't actively committed to my immediate destruction and I suspect I would be haunted by the taking of a life afterwords.

If they aren't actively committed to your immediate destruction then why do they need to be shot? Not being snippy, just trying to understand. I do respect you for actually thinking deeply about this subject and coming to a conclusion that works for you. So few people do.

Just that there can be a very short time in between someone trying to bluff you and them lunging for your weapon. What can I say. Mostly I only have the movies to go by where the guy sweet talks the woman then rushes in and takes the gun while she hesitates. I might well be she who hesitates rather than she who shoots first and determines intention second. I think the assumption is that a woman holding a gun is running a bluff.

One would always like to think that a guy wouldn't try for it. But I suspect a guy is less likely to think a woman is seriously going to pull the trigger.

After being prior military and tons of armed security training and the like. By the time you pull your weapon (Edit, be PREPARED TO SHOOT) it is time to shoot. If you pull your weapon to threaten someone, then your wrong. open carry is better for deterrence.

Edit: every situation is different, ive always been in the mind set of open carry and visual deterent. for me it comes down to very last resort on drawing a weapon. I also pack pepper spray for the less than lethal approach.

if something were to happen just try and keep as much distance between you and the aggresor. If someone comes at you with a knife, the law as I understand it is 30 feet. 30 feet normal people can come very fast and close the distance to stab you. so situations like that, then blammo, knife to a gunfight thing. Unless your out going shooting there is absolutly no reason to draw your weapon Edit: IN A AGGRESIVE MANNER. EVER!

As far as shooting someone, absolutly, I do enjoy my life and want to continue living. so in self defense, with out a doubt.
