When all was said and done, There would be no hero. I'd feel sick about causing harm or death to someone, You and yours would be new gun rights advocates or confirmed fools! No fantasy, just a nightmare situation neither of us would ever forget.

But it is a fantasy. The chances of meeting some evil doer in the woods is pretty small. The chances of that person weilding a gun, smaller. The chances of our Hero happening upon the scene, at just the right moment, guns aready, infinitesimal.

Yes, it's a fantasy. Let's list all the cases of this happening outside of one's imagination. You start.

The point isn't that one cannot imagine a circumstance in which a gun might be useful. The point is that in the non-fantasy world, those circumstances are too rare to worry about. It's much ado about nothing. Statistically, you'd do better for yourself wearing a helmet rather than a gun.

Honestly I think your perception is off quite a bit. The guy carrying a guns wants nothing more than to be left alone and enjoy his day. His worst nightmare is the idea that he could have to some day draw the weapon to defend himself, his family, or close friends. I don't know any dirty harrys or rambos looking to save the day honestly. My first instinct is to run and get away, a weapon would be a last resort.

I very seldom carry when we are just camping/fishing, 99% of folks who may come around are easily deterred by our very fun but loud dogs, the other 1% are usually fish and game folks who have a valid reason to be there. Bear mace is usually on hand though for any furry intruders.

I have no idea where you get off saying something like that, especially given the recent events that have transpired here in America and throughout the world.

You can quote statistics all you want, though oddly enough you didn't actually provide a source for the specific stats which you used.

Statistically speaking, we shouldn't have to worry about emergency exits and flotation devices on airplanes since the chances of any one individual flight crashing into the ocean are very low; every commercial flight has those safety features though.
Statistically speaking, a man shouldn't have to get checked for testicular cancer since his chances of having that are 1 in 263; such a check is still highly recommended for men.
Statistically speaking, there is a low probability of getting electrocuted during a lightning storm, but most people run inside regardless.

We can go on and on about what threats/issues aren't statistically relevant. We still take certain precautions for those threats because the consequences of slipping through that statistical safety net are quite severe....Why should we view carrying a firearm any differently?
