I believe those flaps are covering the lights to keep lights from reflecting off them, which would give away there position (i remember something like that from a show that was covering militay jeeps).

Those are some nice vehicles over there. Do they run good? Do they keep up on the maintenance of the vehicle over there like we would our own? Thanks for sharing and THANK YOU for your service! GODSPEED!

Be safe Dave. Good to see you on the Portal and thanks for sharing the cool pics. And especially for all you do to keep the men and women safe that keep us safe.

Thank You!

Thanks Stu!

Are the flaps over the lights to protect them from blowing sand?

The flaps are there to keep the glass from reflecting light when they don't want to be seen at night.

Lookin' good, Dave!

Thanks for letting us take this trip with you!

Thanks Louis, I always try to take pics out here of things my fellow ExPo'ers would find interesting.

Yes, they run pretty good. I was surprised how many petrol engines they run. They are well maintained although I noticed they run their tires FAR beyond what any of us would feel safe with, especially when venturing deep into the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. Their safety net is strength in numbers (men and vehicles) and an intimate knowledge of the desert.

Nissan Patrols... I was just trying to recall what model the Nissan we had in Qatar was. We also had a few Discovery's, a Padro and a BMW 3 series. I always liked having more metal around me so I never drove or ridden in that death trap of a BMW.

Old Man Emu Dakar HD Rear Suspension

Well, after much deliberation, and with cost in mind, I have decided against custom rear springs and am leaning heavily toward the Old Man Emu Dakar leaves with the OME add a leaf. This is the heaviest duty rear setup that I can find right off the shelf without resorting to a mix and match custom setup. The rear suspension and gears will be the first items on the truck that I address when I return from deployment.

In retrospect, the Deavers and Bilsteins have served me well but they have seen better days, and I need something stiffer since I like to load her up. Those Deavers have been on the truck since 2005 and have been up and down the west coast of the USA, down to Baja and Laguna Hanson, caught air in Arizona at the Expedition Trophy in 2006, been all over Johnson Valley, Big Bear, Anzo Borrego, Calico, and Death Valley multiple times as well as up and down Saline Valley road repeatedly, all while heavily loaded down... R.I.P.

TRDparts4U sells the Dakar springs as part of the OME HD suspension package.

Here are the part #s I'm looking at:

REAR SHOCKS N182 qty 2
TOYOTA BUSHES 90389-A0003 qty 4
UBOLTS OMEU53A qty 4
REAR LEAFS CS047R qty 2
EXTRA LEAF D29XL qty 2

Any of you with these parts on your rigs please chime in with any pros or cons that you may have on these parts! The Dakar springs are on sale now for $333, so I'm about ready to pull the trigger!

Dave,

I have no comments on your parts list but I just wanted to say that I am really anxious for you to get back and start making your modifications and adjustments to your current set-up.

I will drink a cold one for you this weekend as the sun sets over the palm trees as we soak...

Be safe.

Hi Dave

When you had the Deavers made, did they build them rated for the loads your carrying? Are you unhappy with them? The reason I ask, I was thinking about having them make me some springs for the hj45 instead of going with OME.

Ride quality and reputation was my deciding factor.
