Dodge Ram ExPo Build Up

I have ONE payment left on my truck and its all mine. So, in celebration of this event:wings: I finally got some new tires worthy of showing off and I thought I'd post some pics and brag him a little bit. Besides, some domestic love cant hurt.

Its 1999 Dodge 1/2 Ram with a 318 V-8, automatic. I bought it as a replacement for my FJ-62 Land Cruiser. I still got the Land Cruiser but it needs a lot of work to get back up off road ready, let alone daily driver level. I opted for the fullsize domestic as I needed a good rig that could tow my buggy and fit me. I stand 6'7" and 230 lbs. I also had to think about sleepin/camping room. Now with a wife that is 6' herself that pretty much scratched every SUV out there.

After looking at the current models in my price range, the Dodge had the most (by far) storage room behind the seat and came with a solid axle.

Done deal.

I have been working on it quite a bit over the years and I have made several upgrades and additions:

3" Pro-Comp Lift and shocks.
Ramsey 9500 Winch
4 x Pro-Comp 55 Watt Lights and 2 Hella's
Camper Shell
Front and rear bumpers, roof rack and sliders.
CB, Fire Ext. and stocked full of recovery gear, cooking, camping and outdoor gear.

This my boy out around Gila Bend this weekend.

Now that big day is upon us, I started the revamp/rebuild/modiy stage. I know that I am keeping this truck for years to come and have a bit more free cash to spend on it. The first big jump was the snorkel. I custom made it out of 3" exhaust tube. I wont lie, it was hard and there was a lot of welding and grinding. The hood lines of the Dodge are not freindly at ALL for a snorkel.

Next up will be a new rook rack as the one I have is trashed from years of carrying steel back to the shop and build some new alunimum shelves/cabinets inside that camper. :jumping:

Thats a good lookin' Ram. I diggin' the front bumper and sliders. Are you considering some lockers of any sort or are you sticking with the stock internals for now?

Love the RAM! You are going to have to fill us in on the rock sliders!! I am about to build something like that for my truck.

Thanks for the comments on the tube work. I built most of that back in 2004.

I think I am going to stick with stock set up. With the 285's that's on thre now, it drives fine and does well on the road and trail. It has a stock limited slip that still works pretty good. It has helped me out of a jam or two. Besides, if I had that kinda money, it would go into my Cruiser.

The rock sliders are your typical slider, nothign fancy. Steel tube, welded to the frame. I used 4 gusseted supports to the frame and the it mostly made out of 1.75X.120 (wall) round tube.

The only drag about sliders for the full size trucks is the frame is pretty far away from the edge of the body. They move and flex but its the frame that is moveing, not the tube. (As compared to a Toyota, that are rock solid with the boxed frame) But, they work as I have had them save butt once when I got tangled up in a wash out that was pretty nasty.

So if you build a set, make sure ot leave some good gap between the topn of the tube and the pinch of the seam of the sheet metal. I would go at least .75 inches to allow room to flex and move.

GReat looking truck!

Very nice rig. Do you have pics of the snorkel build? That would be very interesting. They don't make an off-the-shelf kit for the Tundras either.

Thanks for the tip. We are going to build some for my bro-in-law's 2006 Ram so this is good to think about.

Nice truck, we had someone looking for a ram snorkle a couple of weeks ago. If you can, post some pics of the under hood portion:)

Nice looking Ram.

About the sliders, maybe the OEM sliders off the Power Wagon would be stiffer. I'll have to check that setup next time I see a PW.

Did you make your own front bumper? Looks good.
