Eezi-Awn or other RTT user tips

The base on mine is aluminum, and can get quite cold....we use two self inflating mats under the standard mattress.

No seum netting is a must, we have the standard type mesh and we had to evauate the tent and sleep in the truck due to a swarm of midges or similar that some how found us on the roof of the truck....so small you could see them crawling through the net its self

Storing dirty shoes

So, how do you store your dirty shoes when retiring for the night?

I saw that someone had a mesh bag for the Eezi-Awn that they used for their shoes. Are these an option for the RTT?

Cheers,
P

I use a Home Depot bag and hang it at the base of the door.
MadBaggins has a super light 2'X2' fiberglass raised pad for a AC he uses under the ladder that works well for keeping dirt out and gives you a place to stand and change and leave your boots.

Beautiful question, P. Eezi Awn makes a hanging shoe bag - or at least I saw Scotty had one made of the same canvas.

Related to that, I've decided to try to spread a plastic tarp on the ground under the ladder for a "Sanitized Standing Station" (cool name, eh?). It's somewhat related to the dirty shoes issue, but more like a dirty feet issue. Now we don't have to stand in dirt barefoot.

I use a piece of shade cloth folded over a few times at the base of my ladder. It works the same way as the S.S.S. but allows the dirt and sand to fall through the weave and not accumulate.

Can you tell I'm excited to go use this tent? I like the name, I may have to use that. I did see Scott's shoe bag and was wondering if it came with the Eezi-Awn or was an option.

Hmmm, shade cloth. I may have to go to Fabricville and see what they have. Yes I just wrote that, don't tell my wife because I complain every time we have to go there...:costumed-smiley-007

If your tent is over the roof of your vehicle or trailer there is usually space between the tent and roof where you can jam your shoes. Thats what I do with my Maggiolina. Well thats what I did with it when it was on my fj60. Once it's on my Taco bed rack I will have to come up with another solution. I may make a small platform that attaches to the rack rails and sits along side the non-ladder door where I can keep shoes, other extra gear, and even a coffee setup so I can get my cuppa in morning without getting out of bed. Another option is a basket that sits under the racks and is open on the sides.

My Technitop came with auxillary shoe bags and they work ok as long as the rain is falling straight down. With some wind you can end up with soggy footware. After a few days leaning against a hot transmission tunnel my boots can get way too ripe to share the tent with.

I have a mesh cargo net that hangs inside my tent, My shoes go in first, then socks, jeans, etc. This keeps them out of the weather, off the mattress and available (warm and dry) in the morning.

I like that idea. I may have a small net laying arround here that never got put to good use.
Thanks,

Cover Questions

I bolted my new Overcamp RTT onto my Jeep yesterday and slept in it last night. After all the talk of uncomfortable mattresses I wasn't sure what to expect but I was really comfortable and I slept like a baby. :)

Operating the tent is really straightforward and quick except everything to do with the cover. I've been struggling with a couple of things:

Firstly, putting the cover on the folded tent without the elastic getting caught on things. The hardest bit is the non-hinge side of the tent which is in the middle of the roof and is not easily accessible from either side of the vehicle.

Secondly, hooking the elastic to the plastic hooks underneath the tent. I'm thinking a long plastic hook would help.

Also where is the best place to store the cover when the tent is in use? If its wet and muddy the front seats won't be so convenient.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Graham

Once again, a conversation on the ol' innernet pays off. Shade cloth is a good idea. Thanks.

New question: who has a clever solution for lighting the tent inside at night? Anything better than hanging a battery powered lantern inside?
