So just out of curiosity how is the jeep doing with mpg as an overall average?

For the trip, I am averaging just over 16mpg.

The low highway speeds are really helping.

Oh, and we are on our way to the first micro brewery in Honduras! ;)

have fun and always be safe!
my sister was in Brazil for a while with Big League Productions as stage manager for The Who's production of Tommy. she stayed in a treetop hotel and had to make two cups of coffee each morning one for her and one for a monkey that would take hers if she didn't have one for it!

Wow 16mpg that is alot better then I though you would do! I figured you would be more in the 11-12 range.

Scott,

I finally got a few minutes and some bandwidth in the same place at the same time and had the opportunity to check in on your thread.

I can feel the wonder in your words.

Enjoy, savor and remember.

Looking forward to seeing you both in April.

We are in Leon, Nicaragua. Life is good.

We drove the worst road I have seen in my travels today. You could only laugh at the endless sea of potholes.

More soon.

Track Log EOTE Expedition

Just thought people might like a little perspective regarding our distance and route. The attachment shows in BLACK our GPS track log since we left Guatemala the first time (before joining the EOTE caravan); in RED is the EOTE group traveling in So Mex; we linked up essentially at the Mexico-Belize border, and everything from then on (also in BLACK) is the group route. We are in Leon, Nicaragua tonight.

Nicaragua is a cool country, and we are enjoying a few days in Leon. We are staying at a hotel called La Perla, a few blocks from the square. It is owned by an ExPat, and is a thoroughly enjoyable place to stay, and surprisingly reasonable given the quality.

The main square is only a few blocks away, and the city has a great feel, due to the university here and growing economy.

Tomorrow, we leave towards Granada and a night camped on a volcano!

I also did a blog update for Honduras and Copan.

The stella there are beyond description

Love the Photos

Never spent much time in that part of the world - I'm jealous.

But, as a connoisseur of bad roads, I'm you have piqued my curiosity – you must post photos; it is a point of honor! (And bragging rights.)

habla espanol??

how many in your group speak the native language, and how well, fluently? im just wondering if that is why your border crossings go so smoothly(i.e. fast and with out bribbery.)keep up the good reports

Native Language?

At the risk of being a bit pedantic, Spanish is not the "native" language, it is the language of education. Many Central (and South) Americans are Amerindians or of Amerindian descent and may speak any number of Indian languages or dialects as their first language. Most will learn Spanish in school and all official business will be conducted in Spanish. Depending on where you are, however, you may not hear much Spanish in the market.

Leon is beautiful city, and surprisingly hip and cosmopolitan due to the multiple universities.

If you enjoy cigars be sure to stop at the Fenix cigar shop/factory in Granada.
