Engine Compatibility

Can anyone tell me if a 1997-02 MITSUBISHI DIAMANTE 3.5L V6 SOHC USED LONG BLOCK ENGINE, 6G74 would fit in my 94 LS? Thanks.

I don't recall what from that engine can be used although I know it's been asked and answered on 4x4 wire before. For one the cam lobe pattern will be different giving you different hp & torque curves. The oil dipstick may be on the wrong side. The starter may also be on the wrong side. You should search the 'wire for more details.

From everything I dug out of 4x4 wire it sounds like it is the same engine in the diamante as it is in the Monty...didn't find anything mentioning issues with the trans mounting up.

Not really here
Montero=rear wheel drive. Diamante=front wheel drive. This equals different transmission mounting solutions. Not only that, but from what off-roader stated about the hp/tq curves, it will change the shift parameters of the transmission as well. I'm not saying that the engine won't work, I'm saying that it won't be an easy bolt right in job.

I wouldn't mind dumping a ridiculous amount of money into this thing to do a diesel conversion. I also can't begin to fathom what would be needed to do the swap, or even where to find the engine. Apparently there was a diesel motor made. It was a 2.8L SOHC Turbo Diesel (thanks wikipedia!).

Any ideas on where to start my foreseeable failure?

Depends on your states emissions regulations.

In Cali they're very restrictive. Not sure about Fl.

That said your easiest possible source could be either Puerto Rico or one that was imported by someone into Canada.

Yeah, here in Florida there's no emissions regulations. It's pretty nice. I used to live in Las Vegas, also known as SoCal. Emissions there was ridiculous.

I found a worldwide distributor out of Malaysia, they almost seemed legit, but I did a quick google search. I need to get down to the nitty gritty to see if the engine would mate up to our transmission. I don't see why not, but wierder things have happened.

I also talked with the Malaysian exporter.I could get a half-cut delivered to the west coast for 3600. That gives you engine, trans, tcase and dash etc. The very best way to go imo. After crunching the numbers with diesel always being higher now (like .70 a gallon here)it would only save me 12.00 per 1k driven. I just can't rationalize the cost other than it would be ultra cool. Alas not worth 4k plus......

Oh really? Because diesel prices out here are about the same like that.

Now that I'm really getting into the meat of this, what about swapping a 3.5L into the truck?

I just don't know anything about that. check 4x4wire. lots of good info if you can tolerate the forum design and figure it out.:bigbossHL:
