Are y'all doing something during the day (hike, mountain bike, etc) or is this more like everyone camping in the same location but on our own during the day?

Well looking at mileage from blacksburg it'd be about a 8-9hr drive for me to LBL. Not sure how comfortable I feel with taking the Jeep that far in the middle of the semester so I'm downgrading my status to a maybe.

West VA's sounding better all the time lol.

OK, it's looking like a few of our far southern brothers might have issues making it in Oct. Specifically Fat Man as posted in this thread and Nullifier http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2010

Is their anyone further south i'm forgetting?

If everyone who still has plans to attend is further north perhaps we should reconsider WV and reschedule LBL in Kentucky for next years gathering?

Thoughts?

WV works for me. I'm about 505/50 on making it to Kentucky because of the distance for just a long weekend.

WV's fine with me, but I don't want to be selfish if that excludes the possiblility of someone else coming that was previously planning on it.

Likewise; with school in session the LBL trip would be a bit tough on the kids for a long weekend. WV would make a much easier weekender with the kids. Don't change any plans because of us though; we don't want anyone put out from our lack of time to commit to a long drive.

Wow, this is quickly moving to a more northerly location and I'm okay with that. I've PM'd Nullifier to verify his absence (or presence if he is able to make it). I'll let you know what he says or maybe he'll post here...

In the meantime, West Virginia may work out okay... its just a bit of a trek for me. At 10 hours, it will make it hard for me to justify the trip... I'd be driving more than camping.

I understand LBL is far for all you Penn folks as well as for the VA guy, so how much better does Big South Fork, TN work out for ya'll? Or the Boone National Forest, KY. That's on the eastern part of those states and perhaps it works out better. How does that change drive times for ya?

Here's how the various places work out on my Magellan Direct Route from King George, VA:

LBL @ Golden Pond: 750 miles; 13 hr trip

Pickett SP @ Big South Fork, TN: 590 miles; 10.5 hrs

S Holly Bay @ Dan Boone: 540 miles; 10 hrs

Cave Lake (Zilpo) @ Dan Boone (northern): 495 miles; 9 hrs

Grandview SP @ New River Gorge WV: 290 miles; 5hr20m

Canaan Valley WV: 223 miles; 4hr20m

Did I miss any possibilities? LBL is highly improbable for me, Boone is better, excellent chance there. WV would make it a definite, but I realize that puts lots of other people out. Chime in; make your choice (or give alternates). I'm likely to show. If some of the "Out West" guys that always get their trucks in the mags would show I'd have to go just to see magazine material somewhere other than the bathroom!

Big South Fork works for me as well, I'm assuming you have the railroad grade in mind?

Is the date fixed? Am I the only one that gets off for columbus day making th weekend of the 7-8 a 3 day weekend?

Joel, has Nullifier gotten back to ya? Fat Man...how's it looking on the house, are you still possible? Is there anyone else interested in this gathering who would have a further distance to travel IF this were to move further north?

I personally want to visit LBL, and i'd like to do it with this group....but doing it this year is now going to be tough on me. But please dont let that influence others decisions.

Considering how many East Coast guys are on here now i see several organized trips every year, i bet every place we'v mentioned plus many more will eventually be visited by the ExPo Posse. :camping:

CLynn85...any info on this RailRoad Grade? I dont remember seeing anything when i was searching around.

Future plans for LBL would be great, summer would be better for us as we won't have to pull the kids out of school in order to go. Big South is fine for me for a weekend (leave here early friday morning, leave there Sunday morn).
I would like to visit all these and more in the future, we already have plans for more trips next year.
And no, I don't get Columbus Day off.

A Turn of Events

Well, I've got some bad news... I can't make this event unless we pushed it into November which probably isn't the best idea. I have my Professional Engineering Exam the weekend after the planned trip, and I really need to be devoting spare time to studying between now and then. I had thought that the test was the first weekend of October, but alas, it is the last weekend. However, I'm all about helping organize it, making phone calls, etc. to help this trip become reality! I REALLY want to see an East Coast gathering and it seems like many of you do as well.

I'm going to suggest West Virginia. Since I can't make it and since it looks like most of you are "definite" if that is the location, it just makes sense. I have plenty of GPS coordinates as does jim65wagon. Between the two of us we should be able to come up with a decent get together.

On our recent trip to West Virginia, we camped on top of Meadow Knob and had plenty of solitude... not a soul drove by as we were up there. So my first suggestion for plenty of 4x4 exploration and remote camping would be the George Washington National Forest (on the border of WV and VA). My second suggestion would be the Canaan Valley area. I can feed more info on that as well.

Any thoughts? Lets agree to a location and start planning the finer points...

I'm really sorry I can't make it. This test is huge and I'm really committed to passing it the first time so I gotta keep studying until :mixed-smiley-030:

Regards,
Joel
